Elderly driven
to update skills

A lot of things have changed since the time of driving a "one-horse open sleigh," and older people who wanted to update their driving skills were able to do just that recently as well as earn a 5 percent discount on their auto insurance.

"A lot of drivers don't realize that now that they're 50 years or older, they're slipping. No, they know. The lights bother you, it's harder to drive in the dark, they know," said Paul Mershimer, 68, of Slippery Rock Township, who recently took the AAA-affiliated course, Seniors for Safe Driving, at Trinity Living Center in Grove City. "Very honestly, it's a good course. You always learn something new."

The two-day course that lasts a total of seven hours is offered to drivers 55 and older to help them brush up on their driving skills. The added bonus of a 5 percent insurance discount for three years is an added draw.

Richard D'Arcangelo, who has been teaching the course for a little over five years, said the intention is not to test students or take away their licenses.

"What it is, is bringing them up to date with driving. For an example, it's important to put hands at the 8 and 4 (o'clock) positions on the steering wheel," he said. "There are openings in your steering wheels for your hands which are below the plate which comes out of your steering wheel when the airbags engage."
