The Northern Mercer County United Way, based in Greenville, is looking at ways to make up shortfalls in its pledge drive, while the Grove City Area United Way is just about to reach its goal.

"We've got about $124,00 so far," said Kelly Bailey, executive director of the Greenville-based organization. That's a little more than half, she said, of the $220,000 pledge goal.

About 10 of the normal contributors to the campaign have not been heard from yet, Ms. Bailey said.

"Sometimes people just forget," she said.

Unemployment, she said, has been hampering the fund-raising effort.

"One of our largest contributors just laid off nearly 500 people," she said of Werner Co. in Sugar Grove Township. Those layoffs will put an added pinch on the drive, she said.
