Broken pole leaves 750 without electricity

An early morning power outage threatened to ruin some Christmas celebrations.

But electric company crews toiled for more than four hours to make sure power was restored just in time for family celebrations.

The first report of an outage in Wheatland, Hermitage and parts of Farrell came in at 2:15 a.m. Thursday, said Randy Coleman, area manager for Pennsylvania Power Co.

A car accident in the center of Wheatland near a substation caused the outage, he said.

The broken pole left about 750 Penn Power customers without power, Coleman said.

Workers had to disconnect power from about 800 more customers so that they could safely repair the pole, he added.

By 6:48 a.m., the pole was replaced, power was restored and the outage was over.
