Drugstore robber took Oxycontin, police say

Police said a man who held up a local drugstore on Christmas Eve was seeking the prescription painkiller Oxycontin.

At 1:20 p.m. Wednesday, David Paul Cherry, 55, of Franklin used a semi-automatic handgun to hold up Cressler’s Drug Store, 3289 S. Main St., Sandy Lake, police said.

Police said Cherry produced a note asking a clerk for the medication and then asking a pharmacist, who gave it to him. He fled in a small red car headed toward Greenville, police said.

When state troopers arrested him in Jackson Township about 25 minutes later, he had the Oxycontin on him, police said.

Cherry was charged with robbery and theft, police said. He is being held in Mercer County Jail on $25,000 bond, police said. His preliminary hearing is tentatively scheduled for 9 a.m. Wednesday before District Justice Lawrence Silvis.
