A Slippery Rock Township woman remained in critical condition Wednesday night with injuries she suffered when a train hit her car Tuesday afternoon and Grove City police continued investigating why the accident occurred.

Rose L. Bishop, 79, of 123 Smith Valley Road, was flown to Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh after her car crossed in front of a Bessemer and Lake Erie Railroad train at 1:45 p.m. at the Madison Avenue crossing, police said.

Mrs. Bishop was northbound on Madison when she drove into the path of the eastbound train, police said. The train hit the car on the driver's side and pushed it along the tracks for more than 100 yards before the car came to rest along the railway, police said.

Mrs. Bishop had to be cut from the wreckage, police said.

The crossing has lights to alert drivers that a train is coming, but no crossing gates.
