High school students will get letters about prom dress code
Greenville High School prom attendees will be getting a letter informing them of the dress code, said Principal Steve Ross.
The letter will be issued ``in light of different fashions,'' he said.
Dresses that feature sheer mesh in the wrong places or midriff exposure will not be allowed, he said.
There have been no violations of school policy in the past but school officials ``decided it would be better to be proactive,'' he said.
Christine Harrison, owner of Christine's Formal Wear, Greenville, said she was worried about the sheer mesh requirement because about one-third of available prom dresses have sheer mesh fabric on them.
Ross replied that mesh will not be allowed on the midsection area or higher. Mesh sleeves would probably be OK, he said.
``It becomes a matter of appropriateness,'' he said, adding that he would be willing to look at a dress ahead of time and pass judgment on it.
There has been no response from students, probably because the letter has just been posted, he said. But he has talked with senior and junior class officers about it.
``They understood the matter behind it,'' he said. ``Our students have always been cooperative in the past.''
