Fireworks light up skies, spark fire atop The Winner
Embers from the fireworks that concluded Light Up Night ceremonies Thursday sparked a fire on the roof of The Winner building.
Sharon firefighters were called at 11:38 p.m. to 32 W. State St. after an employee of Rural Metro Ambulance noticed flames at the back corner of the roof along Porter Way.
``A roll of rubber roofing material, paper and debris on the roof were burning,'' said fire Capt. Thomas Ryan.
Fireworks from Light Up Night 1995 also started a small fire on the roof of the building. Little damage was done in either fire.
Firefighters said they used a fire extinguisher and a garden hose on the roof to put out the fire. Firefighters threw the burnt material off the building.
Ed Friend, the building manager, said he walked the building at about 9:45 p.m. checking for hot spots and found nothing. Friend set off the fireworks.
``Next year we are going to have a firefighter or a safety man up there or something,'' he said.
