SHARPSVILLE AREA

Schools, borough honoring their team

Sharpsville High School's football team, which will be vying for the state championship Friday, will get a community sendoff at about 10:30 a.m. Thursday after the team visits all the schools in the district.

All the district's schools will be closed Friday so students can have the chance to cheer on the Blue Devils against Riverside, said Superintendent Dr. Derry Stufft.

Game tickets are on sale at the high school. The title game begins at 2 p.m. Friday at Altoona's Mansion Park.

Sharpsville school directors, originally scheduled to reorganize and meet Thursday, have postponed their meeting until 7 p.m. Monday in the Pebly building.

Because of the team's success, the borough's Light-Up Night has been changed to Saturday. The Santa Parade, featuring the Blue Devils, will begin at 5 p.m. with the tree-lighting at about 5:30. Kids of all ages may then visit with St. Nick in the borough building.

As a special tribute to the football team, Mayor Ken Robertson has proclaimed this ``Blue Devil Week.''

Local businesses and individuals showed their pride with four pages of congratulatory messages in Wednesday's Herald.
