Mercer native gets MTV video award nomination

Mercer native Trent Reznor shares an MTV Video Music Award nomination with David Bowie for the song "I’m Afraid of Americans (Nine Inch Nails Remix)."

Reznor is the only permanent member of the industrial rock group Nine Inch Nails. The song was nominated in the Male Video category with Busta Rhymes, "Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Could See"; Eric Clapton, "My Father’s Eyes"; Brian McKnight, "Anytime"; and Will Smith, "Just the Two of Us."

MTV described Reznor as play-ing the ugly American to Bowie’s British gentlemen in "I’m Afraid of Americans."

The pair toured the United States in 1996.

Reznor, who has produced re-cordings by Marilyn Manson and former Judas Priest singer Rob Hal-ford’s Two project, has won two Grammy Awards. His other acco-lades include being named one of Time Magazine’s 25 most influential people in 1997, and Artist of the Year by Musician magazine in 1994.

In other MTV video award nomi-nations, Madonna received nine nominations, eight "Ray of Light" and one for "Frozen."

Garbage garnered eight for "Push It," including a chance to compete in the group video, alterna-tive and direction categories. Will Smith had six nominations, includ-ing video of the year and viewer’s choice for "Gettin’ Jiggy Wit It."

The awards show will be broad-cast Sept. 10 from the Universal Amphitheatre.
