SHEAKLEYVILLE
Fire department gets loan for pumper
Sheakleyville Community Volunteer Fire Department is being awarded a 2 percent loan from the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency to help pay for a new $158,000 pumper.
Fire Chief Glenn Vaughn said the 1998 International Chassis was manufactured by Central States Fire Apparatus, South Dakota. The truck replaces one of the department’s other pumpers.
Vaughn said PEMA generally offers low-interest rate loans for such purchases but the loan only pays for 50 percent of the purchase price.
Treasurer Sue Chess said the pumper has been in service for the last month. The truck has a 1,000-gallon tank and can pump 1,500 gallons a minute, she said.
Volunteers will be trying to offset its cost through a fund-raiser at Sheakleyville Homecoming which begins Monday and runs through Aug. 1. Money raised at the event will also be used for operation of the department.
