GROVE CITY

Group has leg up on footbridge

After just a few months of fund raising, the Save the Footbridge Committee has “more than exceeded” the $40,000 they hoped to raise for the construction of a new bridge over Wolf Creek. Chairwoman Sarah Smith, who announced in early May that the committee was seeking donations, told borough council Monday night that the money was in hand.

Ms. Smith said she could not disclose the names of every contributor but singled out Joe Monteleone, of 123 College Ave., who donated $10,000 and put the fund drive over the target. Ms. Smith said she had contacted a pre-fabricated bridge company and gave a drawing to council. The design included an arch at each end bearing the town’s name and a place for contributors’ names to be engraved.

Ms. Smith said the bridge could be built before winter. But rushing the project may be foolish, some council members said.

“I think it’s a little optimistic to think we can get this done in a year,” said Councilman Bill Limberg.

Ms. Smith said engineers could send drawings to the borough in about two weeks, and that it would take six to eight weeks for approval and the contract bidding process. The borough has budgeted $12,000 toward the cost of the bridge so council must seek construction bids the same way it would for any other project, said solicitor Tim Bonner.

Council voted unanimously to move forward with the project.

Limberg said the committee’s efforts should serve as an example for future projects in Grove City.
