MERCER COUNTY

Mercer County added to disaster aid list for spring farm damages

HARRISBURG (AP) — Mercer County is one of five additional Pennsylvania counties that will be eligible to receive disaster aid for damage to farms from excessive rain and flooding in May and June, Gov. Tom Ridge said.

Family farmers in Potter and Tioga counties now are eligible because the counties are contiguous to 10 New York counties named as primary disaster areas. Family farmers in Crawford, Erie and Mercer counties now are eligible because the counties are contiguous to Ohio counties that sus-tained damage.

Farmers in these counties join 27 others that were declared eligible because of severe storms, tornadoes and flooding. Eligible family farmers can apply for Farm Service Agency emergency loans.

Emergency loan applications will be accepted through Feb. 8 for physical and productive losses. The current interest rate is 3.75 percent. For more information, farmers should contact local their local Farm Service Agency.

Ridge’s request for the aid was made in conjunction with a general disaster relief request to President Clinton on June 3.
