10 Herald employees retire, 4 others take buyouts



Ten veteran employees of The Herald have accepted voluntary retirement packages as part of a recent reduction in staffs at all newspapers owned by Ottaway Newspapers Inc.

In addition to qualifying for immediate pensions, those retiring also received up to a year of severance pay, up to 80 percent of health benefits paid by the company until age 65, and a retraining stipend.

People retiring and their years of service to The Herald are:
  • Dave Armstrong, Hermitage, director of advertising, 41 years.
  • Ronald J. Hinkle, Hubbard, printer, nearly 35 years.
  • Joseph P. Kapusta, Hermitage, director of newsroom operations, 30 years.
  • James Lawton, Sharpsville, maintenance, 43 years.
  • Jon D. May, Mercer, printer, 35 years.
  • Craig A. Michael, Mercer, computer systems, 30 years.
  • Donald G. Patterson, Grove City, printer, nearly 31 years.
  • Lynn R. Saternow, Farrell, sports editor, 28 years.
  • Betty J. Schultz, Farrell, business office, 43 years.
  • Larry R. Stitt, Hermitage, printer, 35 years.

    Four other employees, members of the news staff, accepted company buyouts as part of the reorganization. These employees were offered two weeks of pay for every year of service at the newspaper.

    They are:
  • Henry C. Johnson III, Greenville, reporter, nearly 25 years.
  • Denise Kadilak, Poland, Ohio, reporter, 4 years.
  • Linda Linonis, Hermitage, community editor, nearly 25 years.
  • Lawrence Sanata, Clark, reporter, 16 years.
