SHENANGO VALLEY
Plan will expand seniors’ center

Mercer County Area Agency on Aging Inc. has announced a three-prong plan to offer more services to seniors in the Shenango Valley and surrounding municipalities, and spruce up a section of Farrell.
Chief Executive Officer Ann Marie Spiardi told the Farrell Area School Board on Monday the agency plans to renovate the Shenango Valley Multi-Service Center, 1020 Spearman Ave., Farrell, and expand in two directions to build a geriatric health care center and a residential complex. Estimated project cost is $4.3 million to $4.8 million.
Although financing for the project has not been secured, the agency has lined up two partnerships and obtained a state planning grant.
The idea behind the expansions is to allow seniors to “age in place,” Ms. Spiardi said. Seniors who attend center activities but whose health worsens could move into the residential section and not have to leave behind friends and activities to move into a care facility out of reach of the multi-service center.
