MERCER COUNTY

Korean vets will solicit donations for memorial

Beginning Saturday, area shoppers will be asked by veterans to make donations to a Korean War memorial.

The contributions will go toward a local memorial for Korean War veterans to be located at Oak Tree Country Club in Shenango Township, said John Pariza, head of the Korean War Veterans Group. A groundbreaking ceremony recently was held for the memorial along Route 318 at the Ohio line. The 7½-by-4-foot stone memorial will contain the names of 43 Mercer County veterans who died during the Korean War and the names of local veterans who returned home. Oak Tree Country Club donated the land for the memorial.

Pariza, who is a Korean War veteran, said he took on the project because there was no local memorial for the Korean War, which has been called “the forgotten war.’’

The group has raised half of the funds necessary to complete the project. The memorial is expected to cost around $12,000.

Veterans will be wearing identification so donors will know their contributions will help build the memorial, Pariza said.

More than 30 local veterans will be at malls, plazas, and stores throughout the county, he said. Donations also can be sent to the Korean War Veterans Group in care of First National Bank of Pennsylvania, 3167 Main St., West Middlesex.
