17 WWII vets get Jubilee of Liberty medals

Seventeen Mercer County World War II veterans received Jubilee of Liberty medals Wednesday.

In a Veterans Day ceremony at the Mercer County Courthouse, U.S. Rep. Phil English, Erie, R-21st District, presented the medals to the men who served in the military during the Battle of Normandy from June 6 to Aug. 31, 1944.

"I am proud to extend these medals on behalf of the 21st District and our nation to express our gratitude to veterans who risked their lives for freedom on the beaches at Normandy," English said in a news release, adding that everyone owes the veterans a word of thanks.

The families of Donald E. Brown, Emil P. Fabry and John W. Wallace, all of Grove City, accepted the medal posthumously.

The following men received the medals:
  • Richard W. Costell, Transfer.
  • Patsy S. DeMarco, Grove City.
  • John E. Fisher, Grove City.
  • Floyd E. Fritz, Fredonia.
  • James J. Hajdak, Greenville.
  • William E. Himes, Sharon.
  • John N. Leonard, Greenville.
  • Glenn E. McCarl, Grove City.
  • John J. Meredith, West Middlesex.
  • Thomas Nevant, West Middlesex.
  • Evan Owen, Greenville.
  • Bennie C. Redzinak, Greenville.
  • Robert W. Whiston, Jackson Center.
  • Joseph Zarecky, Greenville.
