Merchandise is being cleared out to make way for Ames store

The end of an era for Hills Stores Co. begins today.
Clearance sales at Hills stores in northeastern Ohio and western Pennsylvania begin today in prepa-ration for the stores’ conversion to Ames Department Stores Inc. The conversion includes the store in Hermitage.
Ames bought Hills last year and is converting the stores to Ames operations.
Ames formerly operated stores in Hermitage and Hempfield Township but closed them in the early ’90s. Ames continues to operate a store in Pine Township.
As part of the purchase deal, Ames is conducting an inventory clearance sale in all Hills stores. After the sale, the stores will be closed and remodeled over six to eight weeks. They will reopen as Ames.
The entire process in northeast-ern Ohio and the Pittsburgh area is expected to be completed by mid-April. The stores are the first of 155 to be converted.
