MERCER COUNTY

Father reserves comment

Brady Blake's father said this morning he knew his son did not receive proper care.

"We knew he didn't get the care he was supposed to get," Larry Blake said after hearing portions of a report based on an investigation into Brady's death. The report concluded, among other things, that the baby did not get competent medical care.

"That's why we kept taking him back to different hospitals," Blake said, adding, "He was at the doctor's every week."

Blake pleaded guilty to child endangerment and is on probation for another five days.

Because he is still on parole, Blake said he couldn't respond to some parts of the report, including a recommendation that the criminal proceedings against him and his former wife be re-evaluated.

Blake said he could not remember details, but felt that the people who visited his home to help Brady "were there just to get their paychecks. We called and complained and everyone did absolutely nothing."

Blake said the couple tried to do everything the doctors told them.

Blake, who lives in Volant, has custody of the couple's two children, Larry II, 5, and Beverly, 3. He said Mercer County Children and Youth Services makes monthly visits to his home. At first a nurse also visited frequently, he said.

"I'm not comfortable with that with everything that has gone on," he said.

He said he does not know the whereabouts of his ex-wife and The Herald could not find her for comment.
