Task force takes aim at crimes against local senior citizens

Representatives of senior citizens groups, the Mercer County district attorney and sheriff, and the head of the Mercer County Police Chiefs Association signed a contract by which they will work share information about crimes involving senior citizens.

Sheriff Wlliam Romine, District Attorney James P. Epstein, Sharon police Chief Raymond C. Greene, Ann Marie Spiardi, executive director of Mercer County Area Agency on Aging Inc., and representatives of American Association of Retired Persons chapters Friday put their signatures on the Triad contract. State Attorney Mike Fisher also signed the contract.

It marked the final step in forming the program, joining senior citizens and law enforcement officers.

Work on organizing Triad began last fall, Romine said. Under Triad, a county Seniors and Law-men Together Council has been formed, Romine said.

Meeting bimonthly the SALT council allows the senior citizens representatives to tell law en-forcement officers what kind of crimes are happening to senior citizens and where they are occur-ring. The council discusses what to do about the problems. The SALT council also discusses educa-tional and prevention programs for local senior citizens.

For its first project, Mercer County Triad will distribute refrigerator cards. Attached to refrigera-tors, the cards tell police and emergency personnel who to contact in case of an emergency and the elderly resident’s illnesses and medications.

Fisher said he would like to see a Triad in 67 counties.
