MERCER
Community Band tuning up for 22nd season of courthouse lawn concerts
Mercer Community Band enters its 22nd season of concerts on the Courthouse Square in Mercer June 18.
The eight-concert season -- five featuring the band and three by guest groups -- continues the tradition of Friday night parties that attract 1,000 to 1,500 people, complete with an ice cream social and guest soloists and instrumentalists.
The band, directed by Hendley D. Hoge and made up of more than 90 musicians from Pennsylvania and Ohio, is patterned after the community band concerts of 100 years ago. The band's repertoire includes marches, overtures, hymns, opera excerpts, Broadway hits and sing-alongs.
The roster:
- Norm Mossman Trio and the Mercer Community Band with soprano Gail Kulisich Noulett and saxophonist James Flowers, June 18. The theme is "Echoes of the Past."
- Tamarack Lake Cloggers and the Allegheny Brass Band, June 25.
- Accordion player Johnny Oakes and the Mercer Community Band with vocal soloists Patty Norris and trombone player Tom Sousa, July 2. The theme is "A Patriotic Extravaganza."
- Guitarist Dennis Cheplick and the U.S. Army Jazz Ambassadors, July 6.
- Barbershop quartet Live Wire and the Mercer Community Band with vocal soloists Michalee Lopuh and trumpeter Sid Shuller, July 16. The theme is "Best of Broadway."
- Pittsburgh Swiss Singers and the Mercer Community Band with vocal soloists Colleen Neubert and flutist Amy Orsinger, July 23. the theme is "A Victorian Concert."
- Gospel group B-Attitudes and the Youngstown Community Band, July 30.
- Mercer County Jamboree, featuring bluegrass, folk and gospel musicians, Aug. 6.
An ice cream social begins at 6 p.m. Warm-up music starts at 6:15 p.m., and the main concert gets underway at 7:30 p.m.
In the case of inclement weather, the concerts will be held in the Mercer High School auditorium.
Main concerts are sponsored by Mercer Area Chamber of Commerce, Mercer Borough Council, Mercer County commissioners and UPMC Horizon Hospital System.
Warm-up music is sponsored by Mercer Business and Professional Womens Club, Mercer Eastern Star No. 180, Mercer Hebron Lodge No. 575, Mercer Music Club, Mercer Optimist Club, Mercer Rotary Club, Mercer Womens Club, Volant Lions Club and National City Bank.
