Jocks' court hearing delayed

A preliminary hearing for two men accused of crashing an after-prom party and threatening guests May 8 in Hermitage has been continued.

The hearing for Randy Paul "Bear" Shimrack, 18, of 456 Falls Ave., New Castle, and Michael Paul Strechansky, 20, of 832 Lyle Drive, Hermitage, has been rescheduled for 2:30 p.m. June 23 before District Justice Henry Russo, Hermitage, at the request of defense attorneys D. Neil McEwen and Charles Gilchrest who cited "extenuating circumstances."

Strechansky, however, did not show up Friday for the hearing.

Shimrack, a Sharon senior and high school football star, was charged May 12 with two counts of simple assault, making terroristic threats, reckless endangerment, criminal trespassing and criminal mischief. Police said the first-team All-State defensive end pulled a knife after being asked to leave the party at the home of Lewis Norman Voisey, 40, of 1355 Foxwood Drive, Hermitage.

Strechansky was charged May 17 with simple assault, criminal trespass, and criminal mischief. Police said Strechansky, formerly a football player and wrestler at Hickory High School, scuffled with Voisey at the party.

According to police, Shimrack, Strechansky and a juvenile showed up uninvited at 2:45 a.m. at the Voisey home. Police said an argument erupted when they were asked to leave and Shimrack pulled a knife. Police said another adult was nicked by the knife but was not intentionally cut by Shimrack.

Police said Voisey and Strechansky fought. Voisey had picked up a baseball bat to defend himself and his home, police said.

On May 19, police charged Voisey and Jessica Marie Hunyadi, 21, of 3710 Morefield Road, with furnishing alcohol to minors. The charge is a third-degree misdemeanor and carries a $1,000 fine.

Police said they believe alcohol played a part in the incident.
