Want to go someplace this summer? Try the library

The following is a list of summer reading clubs to be held this summer at area libraries. This year's theme is "Route For Reading: Going Places at the Library."

STEY-NEVANT PUBLIC LIBRARY

Sign-ups began yesterday for the six-week program at Stey-Nevant Public Library, 1000 Roemer Blvd., Farrell. The program will continue through July 23.

Children are expected to read books on their grade level during the course of the Summer Reading Club.

Children of all ages are encouraged to participate.

During each week of the program, the children must visit the library to answer questions about the books they have read. Exceptions are made for vacations and special circumstances.

When the children visit the library, they will work on the craft project, a mobile, to hang in the library during the summer. During the different weeks a new vehicle will be decorated and added to the mobile. In addition, there will coloring contests, activity sheets and guess jars.

Participants who have at least four vehicles attached to their mobile by the end of the program will be invited to a sleepover party in the library. Activities at the party include a treasure hunt, talent show, games and movies.

GREENVILLE AREA PUBLIC LIBRARY

In addition to going places in their imaginations this summer at the Greenville Library, 330 Main St., readers will also be able to learn about the many different kinds of transportation that have been a part of Greenville's history. Each week from June 16-July 29, readers will listen to stories, make a craft item to take home, and have a visit from a representative of different kinds of transportation.

Among the visitors will be a bus provided by Anderson Coach & Tour, tour guides from Greenville Railroad Park Museum and The Canal Museum and some local Boy Scouts to share about the original form of transportation -- walking and hiking.

Weekly sessions will be held from 2 to 3 p.m. Readers from preschool through second grade will meet on Wednesdays and readers entering third grade and up will meet on Thursdays.

Attendance at these weekly session is not necessary. To participate, readers check books out of the library, read them independently and record the titles in their reading records.

MERCER AREA LIBRARY

The Summer Reading Program will begin June 14 at the Mercer Library, 143 N. Pitt St. Children from preschool through sixth grade may participate in a number of activities, including storytimes and special programs. Recreational reading will be promoted and skills learned in school will be reinforced.

The six-week session will continue through July 23 and will feature the following special programs from 10 to 11 a.m. on Tuesdays:

June 15 -- A National Guard representative will bring a humvee and explain its purpose and use.

June 22 -- A PennDOT dump truck will be on display. A representative will describe how the vehicle is used and its special features.

June 29 -- East End Fire Department will display a fire truck. A spokesperson will talk on fire safety.

July 6 -- Anderson Coach and Tour, Greenville, will bring a coach for students to tour. An onboard video will be shown and features of the coach discussed.

July 13 -- Emig Racing will bring a race car and provide information on racing and Mercer Raceway.

July 20 -- State Troopers will present a program on bicycle safety.

Other activities include:

Preschool Storyhour from 1 to 1:45 p.m. June 29 and July 6 for ages 3-6. Registration is required.

Ventriloquist Cindy Speck, Zelienople, will provide entertainment at 1 p.m. .July 23.

The closing program will be a family picnic at 5 p.m. July 28 at the Mercer County 4-H Park. Kevin Delagrange of the Northern Ohio Juggling Institute, will provide the program. Prizes and certificates will be awarded.

Program participants must have a library card. Library cards are free to residents of Mercer Borough and the townships of Findley, Coolspring, Jefferson and East Lackawannock.

GROVE CITY COMMUNITY LIBRARY

Registration for the Summer Reading Program at Grove City Community Library will begin June 10.

Children who register will receive a reading log used to record the titles of 20 books that participants are asked to read to successfully complete the program. They will also receive a bookmark and a plastic bag. All books must be read by July 27 and reading logs turned in at that time. Those children who read the required 20 books will be awarded a reading certificate and have a new book placed on the library shelf in their honor.

All participants should be members of the library.

School-age children are invited to attend "Bookworm Club." This is a 45-minute session of library related activities to encourage reading enjoyment. Bookworm Club will meet at 10 a.m. June 22, 29 and July 6, 13, 20 and 27.

Story Time for ages 3-5 will be held from 10 to 10:30 a.m. on Tuesdays.

SHENANGO VALLEY COMMUNITY LIBRARY

The Shenango Valley Community Library, Sharpsville Avenue, Sharon, will be offering a wide variety of summer programs. The Summer Reading Program will begin June 14. Register this week for the program at the library.

Each week for five weeks you can earn a prize for every five books you read. The program will continue through July 22.

The Summer Activity Programs begin the week of June 21, registration began yesterday for the following programs:

Transportation Club: Completed grades one through five will meet from 11 to 11:45 a.m. or 1:30 to 2:15 p.m. on Thursdays. Fun activities such as crafts and games every week.

Tiny Boat Storytime: ages 2-3 accompanied by a parent will meet from 11 to 11:30 a.m. on Mondays.

Little Tractor Storytime: ages 3 to completed kindergarten will meet from 1 to 1:45 p.m. on Tuesdays and 11 to 11:45 a.m. or 1 to 1:45 p.m. on Wednesdays.

Closing party for the end of summer reading programs will be from 6 to 7 p.m. July 26 or 11 a.m. to noon July 27.
