Stone arch must go, PUC rules

By Hal Johnson

Jamestown's Save Our Arch Committee will decide what, if anything, they can do now that the state Public Utility Commission has rejected its petition.

In a May 17 letter, the PUC told the citizens committee that their petition asking to stop a fall demolition of the landmark stone arch failed to give new reasons or new evidence that would save it.

The PUC said it will have PennDOT tear down the 130-year-old arch on state Route 58 as a traffic hazard. Council read the letter at a recent meeting.

Councilwoman Michelle Brooks, who headed the citizens committee, said Wednesday she will meet with members to discuss what to do. Demolition is scheduled for September.

The last Conrail train crossed the arch in the mid-1980s. PennDOT got the PUC's approval to remove it in 1993. Last year, PUC ordered PennDOT to comply with its previous order.
