Trash at a glance
Here's a breakdown of the new and current rates for refuse pickups in each municipality:

Sharon needs a new contract to start by Feb. 1, 2000. Compared to current rates, Mercer County Regional Council of Governments Executive Director James DeCapua estimates a contract with Waste Management will save the city $38,520 annually and $115,560 over a three-year term.

Waste Management bid $1.11 for each 30-gallon garbage bag picked up, $0.61 for each 30-gallon recycling bag, $8.23 for monthly rental of each 90-100 gallon toter and $8.02 for monthly rental of each 90-100 gallon toter picked up (collection limited to capacity of the toter). Sharon now has a contract with BFI, Youngstown, and pays $1.16 per garbage bag collected; $0.64 per recycling bag collected; and $8.53 for monthly toter rental.

The rates are the same for Hermitage and Farrell.

Hermitage needs a new contract to start July 1. They are expected to award a contract at 6:30 p.m. today at the city building. DeCapua expects a contract with Waste Management will save the city $36,780 annually and $131,795 over a three-year, seven-month contract.

Farrell needs a new contract to start Sept. 1. DeCapua expects a contract with Waste Management will save the city $16,914 annually and $57,789 over a three-year, five-month term.

Wheatland needs a new contract to start July 1. DeCapua expects a contract with Waste Management will save $1,119 annually and $4,010 over a three-year, seven-month term. The company bid a $7.43 monthly, unlimited curbside pick up rate and $0.61 for each 30-gallon recycling bag picked up. Currently, the borough pays $7.65 monthly for unlimited garbage pick-up and $1.25 for monthly for municipally provided recycling bins with Waste Management.

MERCER COUNTY

Waste Management is COG's choice for trash, recycling jobs

Mercer County Regional Council of Governments Wednesday recommended Waste Management of Pa., Inc., Greenville, be awarded contracts for trash hauling and recycling pickups in Hermitage, Sharon, Farrell, and Wheatland.

COG Executive Director James DeCapua said Waste Management was the low-bidder of four bids received. DeCapua estimates a contract with Waste Management will save the municipalities a combined $93,330 annually and $309,154 over the full term of the contract for the residential dwelling/household pickups.

Each municipality will now have to decide what collection options they want in each of their bid packages. They ultimately will decide whether or not to award the contract to Waste Management.

DeCapua said all the contracts, if awarded, will have different starting dates depending on when the municipalities' current contracts expire. DeCapua said they would all expire in January 2003 if they go with Waste Management.
