MERCER COUNTY

Local youth shine at 4-H livestock sale

THE 2OTH ANNUAL Mercer County 4-H Junior Livestock Sale was held Aug. 13 at 4-H Park in Coolspring Township.

At the sale Oscar, the 68-pound Grand Champion Market Goat, was the center of attention. The champion goat would merit attention at any livestock sale, but at this year’s sale Oscar, who is owned by 14-year-old Billy Ward of Sandy Lake, did more than just merit attention. Money paid for him went to the Julie Dickson Medical Fund.

Julie is the Deer Creek Township girl who lost her arm in a Jan. 23 farming accident. Quality Farm and Fleet, Hempfield Township, purchased Oscar for $10.25 a pound, and Bill Williamson of Grove City chipped in with a $100 donation. In all, $797 was paid.

The livestock sale is the highlight of the weeklong 4-H Roundup. All buyers at this year’s event will be invited to the annual 4-H Beef and Lamb Banquet in February.

The sale was also the last 4-H event for the following youth who completed their final year as a Mercer County 4-H member: Scott Calvert, Cheryn Courtney, Joey Dangrow, Mark Hackett, Josh Karns, Pam Warner and Eric Watson.
