Teachers to be in classrooms as contract talks continue
Jamestown teachers will be in school Monday and in the classrooms when students return on Tuesday, even though Jamestown Education Association does not have a new contract with the school district.
Jamestown Area School Board extended the terms of the old contract to the 44 teachers. During contract talks, the JEA has indicated that teachers would return to work when school starts, Linda Zahniser, school board president, and David F. Shaffer, school superintendent, said Friday.
Jill Uzarski, JEA vice president, was unavailable for comment.
Negotiations between school board and JEA representatives are continuing, Mrs. Zahniser said. Neither side has asked for mediation, she said.
Mrs. Zahniser would not comment on the issues that apparently are delaying a settlement.
Previous comments by the JEA vice president said the JEA contends that the average teacher salary at Jamestown is below the Mercer County average.
