Reorganized office will cost county less

The introduction of a computer system five years ago, along with the staff to use the system, were credited for reorganizing the county Prothonotary’s Office at a cost savings.
Mercer County commissioners Thursday made a full-time clerical position a part-time job and raised the pay of the chief clerk and two assistant clerk positions.
When a full-time clerk and a part-time clerk are hired, the Prothonotary Office will have five full-time clerks and a part-time clerk. The office’s staff will be reduced by one half-time position.
Because no benefits are paid for the half-time clerk, the county will see a savings of about $10,000 a year, said Prothonotary Elizabeth F. Fair.
The Salary Board increased wages for the chief clerk, Mary E. Russell, who now will get $11.05 an hour, and for clerk Tanya Hanzes, and a clerk yet-to-be hired, who will get $10.40 an hour.
Indexes were computerized and documents were microfilmed beginning in 1994, Mrs. Fair said. When the state courts approve it, the office will be scanning all documents into a computer system, she said.
The prothonotary’s staff discovered during the past several months it can handle the workload by redistributing the various tasks, Mrs. Fair said.
