City woman welcomes offerings of canes from citizens

Mary DeBlase is seeing a great response from her community since someone walked off with her four-prong cane Thursday.

Miss DeBlase, who lives at Sharpsville Avenue and Silver Street in Sharon, left her cane near a garbage toter while she was sweeping leaves and someone took it. Since Saturday morning, when a newspaper story ran on the incident, more than 30 people have offered to give her a cane, Miss DeBlase said.

Not only that, but someone actually found the original cane in a gutter along North Water Avenue, she said.

An anonymous woman left a cane with a note on Miss DeBlase's front porch. The note, signed "a friend," said the cane belonged to her husband who recently passed away, and she wanted Miss DeBlase to have it. She said she has no way of getting in touch with the woman to thank her.

The original cane belonged to someone else, and Miss DeBlase said she returned it because now she has her own.

Miss DeBlase said she wants to thank all of the people who responded with offers of canes.
