Fire leaves home in ruins, damages 2 nearby houses

Sharon firefighters made two calls overnight to 434 Madison St. They said they couldn’t save the home of Larry and Karen Zec but did manage to control damage to neighboring houses.
Police said the Zecs were sleeping when the fire began at 8:19 p.m. Monday. They said the Zecs’ son, Kenneth, noticed the fire from down the street and ran into the house to wake his parents; they were treated at the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System.
Police said a livingroom window fell in at the 426 Madison home of Richard Negrea. Negrea couldn’t be reached this morning for comment.
The fire also melted the sid-ing of the second floor of Al-bert Brannan’s home at 446 Madison, police said. Marjorie Brennan said this morning she did not yet know the extent of the damage.
The Zecs were unavailable for comment this morning, but police said they had said the house was insured. The Zecs are staying in a local hotel, according to the Mercer County chapter of the American Red Cross.
Firefighters said they were on the scene for about 3½ hours Monday night and were called back at about 6:40 a.m. today when the blaze rekin-dled. Firefighters were there for about 40 minutes this morning.
A state police fire marshal was called to determine a cause. He was expected to inspect the scene this afternoon, firefighters said.
