HUBBARD TOWNSHIP

Rescuers recover slain man from river

Youngstown firefighters Wednesday morning recovered the body of a missing Hubbard Township man from the Mahoning River.

A boat crew found the body of Charles London, 75, of 3441 Broadway Ave. S.E., at 11:40 a.m. some 150 to 175 yards from the West Avenue Bridge, said Battalion Chief James Flynn. Firefighters had been searching that area of the river since learning that London’s body had been thrown from the bridge last Thursday, he said.

Police have said London and his 74-year-old wife Dorothy were stabbed to death Dec. 15. Mrs. London’s body was found in their burglarized home last Thursday morning; London presumably had been kidnapped and killed the night before.

Scott Burrows, 19, the couple’s neighbor, and Mark Worley, 21, of Youngstown are charged with killing the couple, burglarizing their home and stealing their two cars. Worley and Burrows are both in jail awaiting preliminary hearings next week. Officials from the coroner’s offices in Mahoning and Trumbull counties and Youngstown and Hubbard Township police were on hand as London was pulled from the water; they positively identified the body, Flynn said.

A double funeral is set for this afternoon in St. Patrick’s Church in Hubbard.
