Arts guild, bicentennial planners get Pa. arts grants


Contributed Photo: UMOJA African Arts Company is one of the groups that performs at a Kwanzaa celebration at 8 p.m. Monday at the Byham Theatre, Pittsburgh. The show is part of the Y Not? Festival, which also includes concerts by Ahmad Jamal and George Gee and the Make-Believe Ballroom Orchestra.
The roster features established and up-and-coming music and theater performers. Pittsburgh Cultural Trust will usher in 2000 with the Y Not? Festival, a four-day celebration of African-American contributions to culture.

Scheduled to perform:

ä Singer and storyteller Charlotte Black Alston and her brother, jazz violinist John Blake Jr., noon Monday through Dec. 30.
ä Kuumba Trust Kwanzaa Celebration, featuring UMOJA, Kuntu Repertory Theater, the Dancin’ Demons, Children of Love Theater, Salt and Pepper Mime, Xpressions Contemporary Dance Company, I Dream A World and Nego Gate Capoeria Angola Foundation, 8 p.m. Monday.
ä Jazz pianist Ahmad Jamal, 8 p.m. Tuesday.
ä George Gee and the Make-Believe Ballroom Orchestra playing swing-era tunes, 8 p.m. Wednesday.

All shows will be at the Byham Theater. Discounts are offered for students and seniors.
