Jean Neice/Herald: Debby Greene, Sharon, holds the lottery ticket that her new fiance’cq, Tom Mack, also of Sharon, had made as a unique way to propose to her on Christmas Eve.
Debby Greene didn’t expect to win what may be the biggest jackpot of her life when she played a scratch-off lottery ticket Friday.
Miss Greene, 24, an employee of the city of Sharon, said her boyfriend of two years, Tom Mack, 27, gave her a bunch of lottery tickets for Christmas.
As she was going through the tickets, Miss Greene said she noticed one that didn’t look like the rest. Mack, who works for the county 911 and McGonigle’s in Sharon, told Miss Greene it was for the new millennium.
She bought the story and scratched off the ticket’s coating. Instead of discovering a $2 winner, she found a message.
It read: “Debby will you marry me?”
She was stunned, Mack said.
She didn’t say anything for about 15 minutes — after she said “yes,” that is.
After her answer, Mack said, he presented her with the engagement ring he had hidden until the big moment.
Miss Greene said just the day before someone asked her if she was getting a ring for Christmas and she laughed.
“I was so surprised,” she said.
While it is early to make plans, Miss Greene said, they are looking at Saint Patrick’s Day of 2001 for the wedding date.
Mack’s mock lottery ticket was created by Print One/Marketing Concepts Co. in Sharon.
