Council veteran steps down

After 15 years of being a Sharon councilman, Joe Baldwin served at his final meeting Monday and left with heartfelt good-byes.

Mayor Robert T. Price presented Baldwin with a plaque to show his personal appreciation, and the appreciation of council, for his years of service to the community.

Price said he remembers, from the days of his youth, Baldwin’s generosity to the young customers of Isaly’s Restaurant which Baldwin owned and operated until 1974.

Price said he asked Baldwin, who began the city’s recycling program, to come back and help in the spring and fall.

Councilwoman Chris Outrakis said it is difficult for her to think of Baldwin’s departure from city council. She said he is a good friend and someone who always volunteers for everything. Councilman George Gulla echoed her sentiments and said Baldwin encompassed the characteristics of “honesty and integrity ... with capital letters.”

Solicitor William Madden said Baldwin’s agenda was always public and never private. He said Baldwin will be “sorely missed.”

After listening to the glowing remarks from his colleagues, Baldwin said he will miss the people. Baldwin fondly acknowledged employees in city departments whom he interacted with on a daily basis. “These are the things I’m going to miss,” he said.

Baldwin ended with a poem titled “Looking Back.” He paid tribute to the job which he considers “most rewarding” and the “many fine people” who helped make the job what it was.
