MERCER COUNTY

Herald editions mark year, century

To mark the end of the century, The Herald will take a look back at a hundred years of history Friday with a package of local and wire service stories and photos.

What were the top local stories and who had the greatest impact on the Mercer County area in the 20th century?

The Herald polled local historians and longtime county residents to determine what was important and memorable and who played key roles in the story of Mercer County in the final era of the millennium. Their picks and archival photos will lead off the paper’s coverage of the end of the century.

What images will future generations conjure up when they think of the period from 1900 to 1999? Will the future’s iconographers chose the terrible image of an atomic bomb exploding, the triumph of man walking on the moon or the desperate confusion of a crowd of nervous investors outside the New York Stock Exchange on Black Thursday in October 1929 to picture their past?

What price was paid and what lessons were learned in the wars the United States fought over the times and what do the “crimes of the century” tell us about ourselves and our times.

On Saturday, The Herald celebrates the New Year with a rundown of 1999’s top stories and a chronology of the year’s local news.

Saturday’s paper also will include national and international year-in-review stories from The Associated Press and a listing of notable people who died this year.
