ERIE

‘Arthur’ creator Brown honored with show’

Erie Art Museum honors native son Marc Brown with a show of his illustrations.

Brown, an Erie native, created the “Arthur Adventure” series of books, which was adapted for a PBS television series.

Brown has been illustrating children’s books for 30 years, and written stories with his wife, Laurie Krasny-Brown for 20. He was originally inspired by the books of Maurice Sendak to illustrate warm and humorous stories that offer realistic subject matter for children that involve family, friends and school. The art often comes from the places he has lived, including Erie, Martha’s Vineyard and Hingham, Mass.

Other Brown series include “D.W.,” “Rhymes” and “Dinosaur.”

The exhibit will show pencil and pen and ink illustrations and watercolors. The show opens Friday during First Night Erie.

Arthur will perform dance numbers representing the different cultures in the Erie area at 1, 3 and 5 p.m. Friday in the art museum’s annex.

The Erie County Historical Society is preparing the exhibition “Mark Brown’s Erie,” which will be shown in a free admission day March 11.

Brown’s sister, Kim Croissant, on whom the D.W. character is based, will be at the ExpERIEence Children’s Museum at 10:30 a.m. and the Erie Art Museum at 1 p.m. March 11 to talk about Brown and his books and teach the secret of drawing Arthur. Registration is required. Call (814) 453-3743.

The Erie Art Museum show will be up through April 16. Information: (814) 459-5477.
