What are the facts about
colon cancer and are you at
risk?
The American Society for
Gastrointestinal Endoscopy
reports that colorectal can-
cer, often referred to as
colon cancer, is the third
leading cancer killer among
men and women in the U.S.
Each year more than 140,000
people are diagnosed with
colon cancer in the U.S. and
over 50,000 people die from
it annually.
This num-
ber
has
d r o p p e d
considerably
as deaths
from this
cancer are down nearly 5
percent more than the other
leading cancer killers (lung,
breast and prostate cancers).
One of the key factors credit-
ed with the decline is pre-
vention through screening
and the removal of precan-
cerous polyps.
These signs or symptoms
might indi-
cate colorec-
tal cancer:
ä Blood in
your stools
ä Narrow-
er than nor-
mal stools
ä Unex-
plained ab-
dominal pain
ä Unexplained change in
bowel habits
ä Unexplained anemia
ä Unexplained weight
loss
While these are some of
the symptoms of colorectal
cancer, it is wise to note that
colon cancer can be present
even when there are no
symptoms.
This is why screening for
colorectal cancer is so impor-
tant.
Screening can be done us-
ing fecal occult blood tests
and/or colonoscopy. It is rec-
ommended that regular
screening be instituted by
age 50 and repeated every 10
years, up to age 75. Howev-
er, if you are at a high risk, a
screening
colonoscopy
should be performed before
age 50, and after 75 should
be done on an individual ba-
sis.
Some risk factors for de-
veloping the disease are in-
flammatory bowel disease, a
family history of the disease,
and genetic syndromes. Vari-
ous lifestyle factors such as
lack of regular physical activ-
ity, low fruit and vegetable
intake, and low fiber, high fat
diet, overweight and obesity,
alcohol consumption, and to-
bacco use also increase the
risk of developing colon can-
cer.
If you are at risk or show
signs of colon cancer, do not
hesitate to seek professional
attention. Early detection can
be lifesaving.

Pediatric gastroenterologist
Abdominal pain in chil-
dren is a common medical
problem. According to the
University of Michigan
Health System, about one in
three children see a doctor
for abdominal pain by age
15.
In some
cases, stom-
ach pain
may be a
simple virus
which will pass on its own,
but in other cases may indi-
cate something serious. Any
parent or caregiver of a child
with frequent abdominal pain
should consult a pediatric
gastroenterologist for further
evaluation.
Dr. Ibrahim Haddad is a
board certified pediatric gas-
troenterologist who has been
practicing for over 20 years.
He sees patients from birth
to 18 years of age, and has
the special-
ized training
and experi-
ence to treat
pediatric ab-
dominal pain
and the un-
derlying caus-
es of that
pain.
The characteristics of the
pain, along with its onset, lo-
cation and associated symp-
toms, can help determine
whether it is benign or re-
flects a serious medical con-
dition. The abdomen is typi-
cally divided into four
quadrants to better identify
the location of pain.
For example, the appendix
is in the right lower quad-
rant, so appendicitis is a pos-
sible cause of pain in that
area. Pain in the right upper
quadrant can signify liver or
gallbladder inflammation.
Left upper quadrant pain is
common in gastritis or prob-
lems with the spleen.
And left lower quadrant
pain reflects problems in the
colon, such as
