Westminster College con-
tinues to earn national hon-
ors for its academic excel-
lence and commitment to
serving the community.
Westminster was named
to the President’s Honor Roll
for excellence in service
learning for the fifth consecu-
tive year. The Community
Service Honor Roll is the
highest federal recognition a
school can achieve for its
commitment to service learn-
ing and civic engagement.
More than 75 percent of
Westminster’s 1,509 under-
graduate students volun-
teered nearly 30,000 hours
last year through academic
service learning or other
community service.
Service learning is an edu-
cational method in which the
service is integrated into the
course curriculum and re-
quires that the students re-
flect on their service activity.
Service learning incorporates
the mission of the College in
the classroom allowing stu-
dents to grasp “real-life” ex-
periences in their field of
study, while meeting com-
munity needs through serv-
ice. It builds on the Chinese
proverb: “I hear and I forget.
I see and I remember. I do
and I understand.”
“A central theme of our
curriculum is to foster strong
personal and social values as
an important outcome for
our future graduates,” Presi-
dent Dr. Richard H. Dorman
said. “Earn-
ing the high-
est recogni-
tion for the
fifth consec-
utive year af-
firms that we are succeeding
in this mission.”
“Our students are a critical
part of the equation and vital
to our efforts to tackle the
most persistent challenges
facing our campus communi-
ty,” said Jeff Ledebur, com-
munity service coordinator in
Westminster’s Drinko Center
for Excellence in Teaching
and Learning. “It is inspiring
to see them achieve impact-
ful results that demonstrate
the value of service and vol-
unteerism in their communi-
ties, while also displaying the
importance Westminster
places on service and giving
back to those around us.
Our students are not only
serving, but are also integrat-
ing skills and knowledge
from their courses into the
projects they undertake.”
A sampling of local organi-
zations that benefit from
Westminster student volun-
teers include: Lawrence
County Community Action
Partnership, Head Start, local
school districts, Walker
Neighborhood House, Adult
Literacy Center, Big Broth-
ers/Big Sisters, City Rescue
Mission, Crisis Shelter of
Lawrence County, Special
Olympics, Royal Family Kids
Camp, Habitat for Humanity,
Southwest Gardens, and the
American Cancer Society.
Westminster College is
also recognized for excel-
lence in a number of national
publications:
ä Westminster ranks first
in the nation as the “Best
College for Women in Sci-
ence, Technology, Engineer-
ing and Math,” according to
Forbes.com.
ä Westminster ranked
third in graduation rate per-
formance and was named a
top-tier national liberal arts
college by U.S. News Best
Colleges guide.
ä Westminster ranked
sixth in the nation for serv-
ing as an “engine of social
mobility,” according to
Washington Monthly.
ä The Princeton Review
honored Westminster as one
of “The Best 376 Colleges”
and “Best in the Northeast.”
Westminster also earned spe-
cial recognition for its stellar
“Town/Gown Relations” and
having one of the nation’s
best college radio stations.
Nearly 1,600 undergradu-
ate and graduate students
benefit from individualized
attention from dedicated fac-
ulty while choosing from 41
majors and nea
izations on the
ington campus.
