Owner, Shear Excellence
Shear Excellence is a hair
salon. It specializes exclu-
sively in hair. Its styling,
perms and color can be –
and are – top of the line be-
cause the haircuts are shear
excellence.
The cut is the key, the
foundation of the other hair
services.
Sue Spatara has been with
me for 30 years and Trish
Sloan for 21 years of the 32
years that I have been the
salon owner. Together we in
2011 again were voted Allied
News’ “Best of the Best.”
But it is not the quality of
the service alone that ap-
peals to our clients. The free-
standing salon has on-site
parking and is clean and
state-of-the-art equiped.
Also in the mix: We enjoy
our profession and our
clients are quickly friends
and one of the gang.
Part of the Shear Excel-
lence salon experience is the
enjoyment of the seasonal
decorations inside and out.
Do you like to celebrate
Christmas, Valentine’s, St
Patrick’s Day and Easter
plus the other holidays? We
do at Shear Excellence.
At Shear Excellence we
know how to pay attention to
business and enjoy life. Our
clients know how to enjoy
getting their
hair done.
We pledge
more of the
same in ’12.

From Star Tech Inc.
Star Tech Inc. on North
Hermitage Road in Her-
mitage is now in its 37th
year in business. This year
looks to be another banner
year for the information tech-
nology services and manage-
ment company.
Building on their managed
services and manufacturing
skills, Star Tech has grown as
regional businesses outsource
their IT needs. “Through
proper investment, training,
and most importantly our
staff, we are able to provide a
better more efficient solution
to our customers’ IT needs,”
said owner Doug Smith. “We
provide a very specialized
service to
our
cus-
tomers to
help them
compete in a
global econ-
omy.”
Besides its business-to-
business programs, Star
Tech produces its own line
of custom servers and desk-
top and laptop PCs.
“These are not your bar-
gain units.” Smith said. “We
provide systems that are con-
siderably higher in quality
and capability than you will
find from typical mass pro-
duction. And we build them
here in Hermitage.”
This year looks to be very
exciting. Star Tech is build-
ing a new data center for a
regional cloud project to sup-
port their customers and ex-
pects to expand operations
into other locations.
With completion of these
expansion plans, Star Tech
will be able to provide IT so-
lutions to companies of all
sizes in Ohio, West Virginia
and western Pennsylvania.
Star Tech specializes in IP
networking, wireless, IP te-
lephony systems, computers,
servers, laptops, software de-
velopment, IT procurement,
and repair. Make Star Tech
your IT department.

James Scott has owned
and operated Scott’s Green-
house and Garden Center
since 1982.
James opens the green-
house in March and offers a
wide variety of flowers, veg-
etable plants, gardening
hand tools and decor. The
business is known for its
wave petunias and also pro-
vides organic top soil and
peat moss.
Scott uses three separate
greenhouses that store the
inventory he sells during the
season. This property is well-
maintained, with high-quali-
ty, healthy plants, that are
lush and green.
Customers feel welcomed
by the exquisite landscaping,
especially the garden foun-

Two teams of Amish horses removed the 60 or more obstructions that were making the northern reach of the

MERCER COUNTY
By Jennifer B. Barborak
Shenango River Watchers
Shenango River Watchers
celebrated its 10th anniver-
sary with some exciting firsts.
In May, we partnered with
Buhl Farm, the Mercer
County Conservation Dis-
trict, Trout Unlimited and
Wallace & Pancher Inc. to
bring 250 fifth-graders from
Sharon and Farrell schools
to Buhl Farm park for an en-
tire school day to learn about
the environment.
The students rotated
through stations learning
about wetlands, watersheds,
streams, trees and fish. Un-
fortunately, this first Outdoor
Environmental Education
Day was cut short by torren-
tial downpours.
The same group organized
a second day in October for
the same two schools with
250 more students and
adding the Army Corps of
Engineers and the Pennsylva-
nia Fish and
Boat Com-
mission to
the
mix.
This day was
a tremen-
dous success!
In 2012, SRW and Buhl
Park are committed to ex-
panding the program to four
schools over two days. That
expansion will allow us to ed-
ucate over 500 students.
Another exciting first for
Shenango River Watchers
and our watershed communi-
ties was the grand re-open-
ing of the northern reach of
the Shenango River to water-
craft. Several years of meet-
ings, permits, and extensive
fundraising and grant writing
culminated with two teams
of Amish men and their
horses removing the 60 or
more obstructions that were
making the Shenango dan-
gerous for boaters.
Phase one, from Pymatun-
ing Park in Jamestown to
Riverside Park in Greenville,
was completed in September.
SRW celebrated with the
first Paddlefest in October,
where, on a cold and rainy
day, paddlers brought their
canoes and kayaks from as
far away as Philadelphia and
Columbus to enjoy the newly
opened beautiful stretch of
river.
This will be a challenging
year for SRW. Our commit-
ment to cleaning, preserving
and protecting the Shenango
River watershed will be
proven through our multiple
clean up events, tire recy-
cling days, fundraising
events, water trail work and
partnerships with other or-
ganizations such as Mercer
County Conservation District
and Mercer County Trails
Association for upcoming
paddling events.
This year SRW is also
committed to securing the
funding to remove nearly 60
more obstructions from the
Shenango from Riverside
Park in Greenville to Shenan-
go River Lake. SRW is also
supporting Greenville High
School students’ research
and study of sediment com-
position through the obstruc-
tions and Wallace & Panch-
er’s research on the effects
of the obstructions’ removal
on aquatic life in the river.
SRW is sure to be doing
something of interest to you
or your group in 2012. To
learn more visit our website
www.shenangoriverwatch-
ers.org or become a friend of
Shenango River Watchers on
Facebook. The support of
our members, volunteers
and donors is vital to our
success and we hope you
will consider joining us in
2012.
However you do it, get in-
volved and make a difference
for our community by im-
proving the Shenango River
Watershed.
Membership is just $10 a
year and you can join by call-
ing our office at 724-342-5453
or by visiting our website.
