By Patricia Buck,
Co-Founder and Director of
Outreach & Education
Center for Foodborne Illness
Research & Prevention
The Center for Foodborne
Illness Research & Preven-
tion was founded in 2006 by
Grove City resident, Patricia
Buck, and her daughter, Bar-
bara Kowalcyk, who current-
ly resides in Raleigh, N.C.
Buck and Kowalcyk be-
came active in food safety af-
ter the death of Kowalcyk’s
son, Kevin, in 2001 from an
E. coli O157:H7 infection.
Since then, both women
have earned national reputa-
tions as food safety advo-
cates. They have served on
national committees and fo-
rums to provide input on
food safety issues and educa-
tion strategies. Kowalcyk, as
a member of the National
Academies of Science Com-
mittee, was a co-author for
the NAS report, Enhancing
Safe Food: The Role of the
Food and Drug Administra-
tion.
In 2007,
CFI was
asked to par-
ticipate in a
d o c u m e n -
tary about food production in
America. Kowalcyk and
Buck agreed and their work
was highlighted in the film,
Food Inc. This 2009 docu-
mentary was nominated for
an Oscar.
Due to the film’s high pro-
file, Kowalcyk became a
prominent figure and in
2010, Yoko Ono selected her
as one of the recipients for
the LennonOno Grant for
Peace. Later in 2010, Huffing-
ton Post readers selected
Kowalcyk as Huffington
Post’s 2010 Ultimate Game
Changer in the food catego-
ry.
CFI’s mission is to prevent
foodborne illness through re-
search, education, advocacy
and service. Buck and
Kowalcyk envision CFI as an
organization that will provide
reliable, science-based infor-
mation about foodborne ill-
nesses and food safety is-
sues.
For example, during 2009
and 2010, CFI provided this
type of information to policy
makers and others involved
in drafting important national
food safety legislation.
On Jan. 4, 2011, President
Obama signed the Food
Safety Modernization Act,
which was the first overhaul
of FDA’s food oversight re-
sponsibilities since 1938.
In 2010, CFI was awarded
a federal grant to conduct a
feasibility study about the
long-term health effects of
foodborne illness. This FDA
study, led by major re-
searchers on foodborne ill-
nesses, will be completed
this year.
Early in 2011, Barbara
Kowalcyk became CFI’s
CEO and received her doc-
torate in epidemiology from
the University of Cincinnati.
This past fall, CFI began
moving its headquarters to
Raleigh.
Currently, CFI is working
to develop initiatives aimed
at improving our knowledge
about foodborne illness and
ways to better inform policy
makers, regulators and the
general public about impor-
tant food safety and public
health issues.
In June 2011, Buck re-
ceived the Paul Harris Fel-
lowship and medal, along
with a Rotary National Ser-
vice Award, from the Slip-
pery Rock Rotary Club,
which nominated Buck for
the honors. Buck was very
pleased for the recognition
and hopes to work with Ro-
tary in the future to improve
food safety.
CFI thanks Grove City,
Sharon and the surrounding
communities for their wonder-
ful support and encourage-
ment. All donations to CFI, as
a 501(c)(3) organization, are
tax-deductible.
