For Roman Catholic par-
ents, baptism is the first
milestone in their child’s life.
It’s a sacrament of com-
mitment to the faith and a
joyous occasion celebrated
by family and friends. These
festivities have become such
an integral part of the rite
that many now view baptism
as a sacrament reserved for
the very young.
According to Father Jeff
Noble, pastor of Church of
Notre Dame, the sacrament
of baptism has a message for
all the faith-
ful. “Baptism
is the sacra-
ment of re-
gener a t i on
through wa-
ter in the word,” he said.
To convey this message of
renewal, Father Noble envi-
sioned a baptismal font for
the church that would serve
as a symbol of the sacrament
and be felt fully by the con-
gregation.
While most baptismal
fonts are elevated basins Fa-
ther Noble’s design called
for a two-tiered structure
with an upper level holding a
small pool of water cascading
down into a larger shallow
pool.
Local contractor Mark
Hudson reconfigured the
front of the church to accom-
modate the size of the font.
Plumbing expertise was pro-
vided by Jim Sheehan, who
installed the system that cre-
ates the flow of water.
Custom Stone & Tile pro-
vided the marble that sur-
rounds the exterior of the
baptismal font. Perlotta Mar-
ble imported from Italy was
chosen for its color and the
distinctive pattern created by
fossilized sea shells. Cutting
the stone and assembling
the marble exterior was the
final step in completion of
this project.
For the Easter celebration
this April, Notre Dame will
once again celebrate Christ’s
resurrection. The water will
be blessed, the candles lit.
Candidates young and old
will be prepared for baptism.
The eucharist of bread
and wine will be laid out.
And celebrants will immerse
themselves in the water as
was done before at the origin
of their faith.
