VIENNA, Ohio
From Governor Insurance
Agency
If you’re looking for any
kind of insurance, you would
do well to start out at Gover-
nor Insurance Agency, 972
Youngstown-Kingsville Road
in Vienna, Ohio. Chances
are good that it will be the
only place you need to look.
Their departments special-
ize in personal lines (auto,
home, life
and health),
c o m m e r -
c i a l / b u s i -
ness poli-
cies, group
benefits packages, and spe-
cially designed national pro-
grams.
The agency’s strength is
rooted in its history, which
extends back to its founding
by Richard Governor during
the 1940s. Robert Thompson
Sr. bought it in 1963, and in
1992 the Governor Agency
acquired the Gibson Agency.
The current CEO, Bob
Thompson Jr., has worked
with the agency since 1974.
Because Governor Insur-
ance represents a number of
insurance carriers, its spe-
cialists can provide you with
a choice of rates and cover-
ages, whether you need per-
sonal or business insurance.
“We have a computer rat-
ing service that will compare
several different carriers at
the same time,” Thompson
said. “It is seldom that we
can’t help people out, not
only from a price standpoint,
but also from a coverage and
service standpoint.”
Because of the complexity
of insurance policies and the
laws governing the industry,
Governor agents focus on
making sure that their
clients understand both the
costs and coverages of the
insurance they are consider-
ing.
“For example, every
homeowner policy will ex-
clude or limit specific items,
such as guns, jewelry, furs
and backup for sewer or
drains” Thompson said.
“Since Ohio recently passed
a law requiring ATVs to be
licensed, they are automati-
cally excluded now from
homeowner policies. We
don’t want customers to be
surprised by discovering that
when a loss occurs. It is our
job to make our customers
aware of these limitations
and provide the coverage
they feel they need.”
The same considerations
must be addressed on the
business side, although they
are more complex. The Gov-
ernor Agency’s broad experi-
ence gives them an advan-
tage in doing this.
We insure everything
from small main street shops
up to large corporations with
facilities in many states,”
Thompson said. “We have
even developed national pro-
grams for groups that have
specialized needs.”
The first of these was a
program for the National
Dog Groomers Association
of America in Clark that
Thompson developed in
1985.
“They needed a special
approach since most policies
exclude customers’ pets,”
Thompson said. “We now in-
sure about 5,000 businesses
across the U.S. in that pro-
gram”
The key to Governor’s
success is the 21 high-quali-
ty, knowledgeable employ-
ees who make up the spe-
cialized departments for
personal, business, group
health and the national pro-
grams, including Bob’s wife
Dawn and other members of
the Thompson family. Their
son Robert is full time in
auto and home insurance.
Daughter Abbie Hancock
works full time in the nation-
al programs department.
Daughter Annie O’Brien
(Abbie’s twin) and Lauren
Thompson work part time.
