Hubbard to make a run at TAC-8 title

Not unlike your basic investment portfolio, Hubbard High School head football coach Jeff Bayuk is hoping to diversify in '96.

Entering his sixth season, Bayuk (28-22) will count upon a nucleus of seven returning lettermen from last season's 6-4 contingent. However the Eagles were somewhat one-dimensional last season, as then-sophomore Frank Harris burst upon the scene to establish a new school single-season yards rushing standard (1,234 yards). This year, Bayuk is hoping his other skill-position people can augment Harris' talents, making Hubbard more of a multiple threat.

``Frank is a very talented runner. He has the best vision of any running back I've ever coached,'' Bayuk said in praise of the 5-foot-9, 190-pound junior slasher, whose ability `` ... allows us to do a lot of things up front we normally would not be able to do, like with zone blocking. We can just let him find the hole, let him use his abilities.

``But,'' Bayuk cautioned, ``we can't get to where we need to be by expecting him to carry the load on every play. We were pretty much restricted last year to a running attack.''

So Bayuk will be counting on the other returnees and some talented newcomers, led by senior quarterback Steve Valley, who is slated to start for the first time.

Valley will have two formidable targets in 6-foot-3 athletic senior wide receiver Lance Linden and 6-4, 240-pound tight end Julian Jennings.

Seniors Henry Himes, D.J. Lawrence and Rob McMillen, as well as junior T.C. Lee also will seek action as wide receivers, and junior Pat Wren heads the cast of candidates for starting flanker, where his classmate, Jim Cerenilli and sophomores Jason Bastin and Eric Oltmann will lend depth.

Anchoring the offensive interior, coached by veteran assistants Jack Arvin and Mickey Sikora, is senior tackle John Angelo, a returning starter.

Seniors Marty Yaniglos, Mike Kuty and Tim Lehman and juniors Shawn Klingensmith and Mike Roth also are interior line candidates, in addition to center Mark Eckard, and a list of guards including Matt Karlovic, Bruce Brent, Tony Neri and Mike Witt _ all juniors _ and seniors Kevin Ruminski, Andrew Toke and Scott Bondy. Sophomores Brent Hughes, Shawn Marcello, John Witt and Glenn Silvidi, and juniors Mike Kozinski and Robert King also will seek playing time.

Junior Todd McKinney and sophomores Matt Kanetsky and Justin Bastin will serve as Valley's backups. Spelling Harris at tailback will be juniors Ray Hull and Mark Marcis, as well as sophomore John Schiraldi. Sophomore Carmen Tanferno, senior Kevin Herrholtz, juniors Billy Hendrix and Alan Charity and Bill Colletta will vie for playing time at fullback. Jack Kline, senior Clint Gault, juniors Jim Tomory and Joe Shepherd and sophomore Joanthan Bastin will contend for the berth at tight end.

Bayuk felt ``Our linebackers,'' led by junior Matt Karlovic, ``are probably gonna anchor our defense. He's a very physical player, who has a keen sense for finding the football.''

Senior outside linebacker Kevin Herrholtz, a returning starter, also is expected to lead the defense. The Eagles' secondary will be led by Linden and also will include Page, Lawrence, Lee and Harris.

The other possibilities as outside linebackers, tutored by Bayuk, are Tanferno and Valley, while the inside 'backers could include Lehman, Neri and Roth. The down linemen complementing Angelo could be Ruminski, Brent, Yaniglos and Witt, while the ends likely will be some combination of Jennings, Kline and Lozinski.

Shepherd and Valley will handle the place-kicking and punting chores, respectively.

In the TAC-8, Bayuk said, `` ... no question, Liberty's program has the most talent coming back. With their size and numbers, they'd be the preseason pick.''

And the Division III Eagles, who have 49 players on their roster?

``We just hope we can give a good run as being one of the stronger teams in the league,'' Bayuk concluded. ``We're looking for another winning season here.''
