SHARPSVILLE

50th reunion of perfect team is scheduled for Sept. 27-29

At least it should be for everyone who participates in the 50th anniversary celebration of Sharpsville High's only ``perfect'' football team, the 1946 squad that posted a 10-0 record.

``The 1934 team was undefeated, but they had a tie,'' said Pat White, a Hermitage man who is one of the coordinators of the upcoming reunion. ``And Sharpsville has had some other great years, but never another perfect season.''

White said the community is invited to participate in various activities that weekend. On Sept. 27, a pregame buffet will be held at the Radisson Inn, near West Middlesex, at 5 p.m. The team will be honored at halftime of the Sharpsville vs. Wilmington game that night.

``We'll also be recognizing the cheerleaders, majorettes, band members and homecoming queen's court,'' said White. ``They were part of the whole thing.''

The reunion will include golf, tennis and bowling for those interested on Saturday, followed by a picnic on Sunday at Buhl Farm, open to the entire community of Sharpsville.

``It's open to the community, because that season was really a community-wide effort,'' said White. ``Everyone was behind us and the support was tremendous.''

However, White stressed that anyone who would like to attend the pregame buffet at the Radisson should contact him before Sept. 1. Tickets are $20 each.

The 1946 squad was a juggernaut that amassed 268 points, while allowing only 36. Coached by Robert ``Red'' Johnston and assistant John Cunningham, the club recorded the following wins: Lawrence Prep, 53-0; Strong Vincent, 19-7; Windber, 21-6; Brookfield, 32-0; Erie Prep, 24-12; Midland, 18-6; Hubbard, 25-0; Grove City, 19-7; Greenville, 25-0; and Monaca, 32-0.

The team won the Northwest Pennsylvania Big 15 Conference title that season, led by all-state second-team fullback Jabby Ellison and captain Frank Erme, an all-state honorable mention running back.

Other team members included: Ed Stover was faculty manager, while Frank Towns was a volunteer coach.

Harry Pebly, superintendent of schools, served as announcer at the games. Charles ``Chuck'' Robins was principal.
