Old-Fashioned Ginger Bread

1/2 cup oleo or butter

1/2 cup sugar, creamed with oleo or butter

1 egg, beaten well

2 1/2 cups sifted flour

1 teaspoon cinnamon

1 teaspoon ginger

1/2 teaspoon cloves

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 cup molasses

1 cup hot water

1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda



Sauce for Ginger Bread:

3/4 cup sugar

1 1/2 tablespoons cornstarch

1 1/2 cups boiling water

3 tablespoons butter

2 teaspoons pure vanilla

1/2 teaspoon salt




1. For ginger bread, mix all ingredients as given and bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes.

2. For sauce, mix sugar, cornstarch, add water gradually, stirring constantly. Boil 5 minutes.

3. Remove from heat, add butter, vanilla and salt. Put this over ginger bread when serving. Top with whipped cream. (The ginger bread recipe is more than 100 years old.)
