More than $1,000 in prizes will be awarded, including the grand prize of $250.

A coupon and details of the contest appear on page B-8 Sunday, Sept. 7, and will appear regularly throughout the contest period. Or you can read them online and print a copy of the entry form.

This is the fourth year for The Herald's recipe contest in the 1990s. The contest, which was revived in 1994, was a popular event in the late 1970s and early 1980s. In 1994, more than 300 recipes from contestants were featured in a cookbook. In 1995 and 1996, more than 200 recipes were published in the cookbooks along with photos and stories on the winners and semi-finalists in the recipe contest.

Readers may submit one recipe in each of the six categories, which include a cooking light category reserved for favorite traditional recipes that have been revised to cut fat and calories. Other categories are: appetizers, salads, ethnic, main dish/casserole and desserts.

The contest is open to the general public but excludes professional chefs and cooks and employees of The Herald, Allied News and The Hubbard Press.

96 cookbook cover A panel of judges will pick three semi-finalists in each category. Those 18 contestants will be invited to compete in a cooking contest Oct. 18. Recipes are coded by category and numbered so the judges do not see the name of the person who entered the recipe. At the Oct. 18 event, the judges will taste each of the various dishes and decide on the winners. A winner will be named in each category, along with an overall grand prize winner.

Each category winner will receive a $75 grocery shopping certificate, redeemable at Hermitage County Market.

All of the recipes submitted for the contest will be published in a cookbook Sunday, Oct. 26, in The Herald. Its contents will appear later on our Web site. (Click here to read last year's cookbook)
