George Gerhart
HONOREE'S STORY
Buhl Boulevard, Sharon.
EDUCATION: Earned a bachelor's in psychology at Penn State University; earned a master of arts degree in counseling and in college student personnel administration from Penn State University.
MILITARY SERVICE: Captain in the U.S. Army Field Artillery for 4‡ years; including a year in Vietnam as an aerial and ground forward observer and intelligence officer in the First Cavalry Division.
EMPLOYMENT: Financial aid officer at Penn State Shenango. Employed by the University for 30 years -- eight at Fayette campus and 22 at Shenango campus.
FAMILY: Married to Nancy Gerhart for 34 years, three children and one grandson.
COMMUNITY SERVICE:
Member of First United Methodist Church of Sharon, where he chairs the administrative board; teaches Sunday school; is a member of the sanctuary choir and United Methodist Men.
Involved in Western Pennsylvania Conference of the United Methodist Church where he is director of the Lay Leadership Training School for the district; chairman of the Higher Education Scholarship Committee; member of the Bishop's Committee on the Episcopacy; has served as chairman and member of several committees.
Worship leader/preacher at the Shenango Campground service sponsored each summer by Christian Associates of the Shenango Valley.
Current secretary and past president, Kiwanis Club of Sharon.
Member of the Shenango Valley Intergovernmental Study Committee and its coordinating committee.
Member of ERASE, an anti-drug coalition.
Member of the judging panel for The Herald High School Academic All Stars Awards program.
Member of the worship service committee of the Mercer County Bicentennial Commission.
Past president for 10 years of the Academic Boosters Club of Sharon High School.
Member of the strategic planning committee of the Sharon City Public Schools.
Coordinator of the Highway Clean-up Program of Penn State Shenango at the Route 60/Interstate 80 interchange.
Member of the executive board of the former Contact Penn-Ohio, a telephone helpline.
Former loan executive for the United Way of Mercer County and member of the United Way Committee at Penn State Shenango.
Neighborhood 'Mother' for the Mothers March of Dimes.
