Daniel Frances Kelly
New Castle man had daughter, son living here

Daniel Frances Kelly, New Castle, died at 12:20 p.m. Tuesday (9-11-01) in St. Frances Hospital, New Castle. He was 81.

Mr. Kelly was born Oct. 11, 1919, in Murrinsville, Pa., to Augustus and Esther McMurdy Kelly.

He was a 10-year Navy veteran, serving one world tour.

Mr. Kelly retired after 30 years as a foreman from the former Youngstown Sheet & Tube plant in Youngstown.

He was a member of Mount Jackson (Pa.) Presbyterian Church.

Mr. Kelly belonged to the American Legion Earl J. Watt Post in Bessemer. He loved hunting, fishing, football and was an avid sports fan.

His wife, Geraldine Huston, whom he married Oct. 24, 1945, survives at home.

Also surviving are two daughters, Miss Alberta Kelly, New Castle; and Miss Colleen Kelly, Hermitage; a son, Daniel, Sharon; and two grandchildren, Josh and Katie Kelly, Sharon.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Esther Gorgas; and three brothers, A.J. (Bud), Joseph and Regis.

Clyde J. Metz

Lebanon Presbyterian member worked in Calif.

Memorial services will be Thursday (9-13-01) for Clyde J. Metz, Overlook nursing home, New Wilmington, formerly of 860 Clarksville Road, Hermitage. He was 92.

Mr. Metz was born Dec. 12, 1908, in West Middlesex to Joseph and Ida Mae Metz.

He attended Central Junior High School in Youngstown.

Mr. Metz worked for local steel mills during World War II and he was a carpenter. During World War II, he served with the Civil Defense.

He worked as a building inspector for the Santa Ana Schools in California.

A member of Lebanon Presbyterian Church, Lackawannock Township, Mr. Metz also served as a past pastor of the North Long Beach Spiritual Science Church in California.

Surviving are: two daughters, Mrs. Robert (Jane) Jackson, Newberry Springs, Calif.; and Mrs. Richard (Doris) King, Salem, Ore.; a son and daughter-in-law, William and Beverly Metz of Paramount, Pa.; a stepson, Edward E. Winters, West Middlesex; a sister, Mrs. Clarence (Jane) Wozniak, Lackawannock Township; and seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Doris Metz, who passed away in 1978; his second wife, Eva (Bumgarner) Metz, whom he married on Dec. 27, 1980, and who passed away Aug. 3, 2000; and two brothers, William "Burt" Metz and John Metz.

Thomas P. King

'65 Sharon grad, Air Force retiree was postal worker

Memorial services were Friday (9-7-01) in Tacoma, Wash., for former Sharon resident Thomas P. King, 54, of Puyallup, Wash. He died unexpectedly Sept. 4, 2001, in Madigan Army Hospital in Tacoma.

Mr. King was born May 14, 1947, in Thomas J. and Mabel Weikal King.

He graduated from Sharon High School in 1965; and in 1969 from Bethany (W.Va.) College, where he was a member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity.

Mr. King served two tours in Vietnam, where he taught English to the Vietnamese children.

He was retired from the U.S. Air Force.

Mr. King worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 24 years. During that time he received his master's degree from Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma and then completed two years in law school.

He leaves his wife, Naomi Mosley King of Puyallup, whom he married Nov. 9, 1991; two daughters, Jeanette Ashton, Seattle; and Katelynn King, Dallas; a sister, Margaret King, Sharon; and a grandson, Bryant Ashton, Seattle.

His parents preceded him in death.

Marjorie Mae 'Pudge' Wolfe

Retired bookkeeper belonged to Covenant Presbyterian

Marjorie Mae "Pudge" Wolfe, 2200 King Drive, Hermitage, died at 6:50 p.m. Tuesday (9-11-01) in her home. She was 78.

Mrs. Wolfe was born Sept. 28, 1922, in Sharon to Fred L. and Blanche V. Cooper Williamson.

She was a 1940 graduate of Sharon High School, where she played coronet in the marching band and in the Shenango Valley Concert Band.

She attended the former Sharon Commercial Institute.

An avid golfer, Mrs. Wolfe was a member of Greenville Country Club for more than 20 years and of Hickory Women's Golf League.

She was a lifelong member of Covenant Presbyterian Church, Sharon, where she was a longtime member of the Couplers Sunday School Class. Mrs. Wolfe also taught Sunday school there.

She worked as a bookkeeper with her husband at his business, the former Wolfe Motor Sales in Greenville, from which she retired.

Mrs. Wolfe previously worked in the order service department at Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp. She also had worked at First National Bank in Sharon.

Surviving are: her husband, J.S. "Stew" Wolfe, whom she married Nov. 15, 1952; a daughter, Mrs. Robert (Nancy W.) Bretz, Pulaski; two sons, Gerald S. Wolfe and his wife, Judith, Clark; and David L. Wolfe and his wife, Susan, Chardon, Ohio; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A sister, Chrystal V. Wright, preceded him in death.

Charles Edward 'Chuck' Black

Mercer native, insurance man was retired Purdue prof

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Charles "Chuck" Edward Black, 71, of Charlotte, died peacefully in his sleep Sunday (9-9-01).

He was born June 29, 1930, in Mercer, the son of Florence Pearson Black of Charlotte and the late Quincy Gordon Black.

Mr. Black was a graduate of Mercer High School and attended Purdue University.

He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. After the war, he was an accountant with Tennessee Gas Transmission Co.

Mr. Black entered the insurance business in 1957. He was listed in "Who's Who in the Life Insurance Industry" and was a member of the Million Dollar Round Table for many years.

Mr. Black returned to Purdue University as an associate professor in their Life Insurance Marketing Institute. There, he lectured at leading universities throughout the United States and Canada. Mr. Black retired in 1987.

Survivors are his wife, Nancy Monteith Black; a daughter, Sandra Black Pichette and her husband Albert; sons Mark Edwin Black, and Jeffrey Gordon Black and his wife Tracy, all Charlotte; a stepdaughter, Cindy Dove Cochran and her husband, William Earl III; four grandchildren, Emily Marie Pichette, William Earl Cochran IV, Amy Marie Black and his namesake, Kenneth Charles Black; a sister, Helen Black High; his nephew, Ronald Alan Hinds Walker, all Charlotte; and his beloved black lab, Lady Dog.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Hospice at Charlotte 1420 E. Seventh St.; or the American Cancer Society, 500 E. Morehead St., both Charlotte, N.C. 28202.

Marcellino 'March' Conti

Retired Lordstown inspector was auto parts delivery man

Funeral services will be Friday (9-14-01) for Marcellino "March" Conti, 292 Charleston Road, Jefferson Township. He passed away at 12:52 p.m. Monday (9-10-01) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System after a brief illness. He was 61.

Mr. Conti was born April 30, 1940, in New Castle to Joseph A. and Antoinetta DeFelice Conti.

A 1958 alumnus of New Castle High School, he retired Oct. 1, 1999, as an inspector from General Motors Lordstown (Ohio) Assembly Plant, where he was employed more than 30 years.

Following his retirement, he was employed by Carquest Auto Parts, Hermitage, as a delivery driver.

Mr. Conti, who was of the Protestant faith, had an outgoing personality and was well liked by all who knew him.

An outdoorsman, he enjoyed gardening, hunting and sports, particularly baseball, which he participated in early in his life. He was a U.S. Army veteran stationed in Germany during the early 1960s.

Surviving are: his wife, the former Diane S. Mull, whom he married Aug. 8, 1967; two sons, Christopher L. Conti, Gettysburg, Pa.; and Eric M. Conti, Clarion; his father, New Castle; and two sisters, Mrs. Barry (Catherine) Westcott and Mrs. James (Mary) Graziani, both New Castle.

He was preceded in death by his mother; one sister, Palma Saad; and an infant brother, Anthony Conti.

Lois M. Currie

Homemaker had worked for Cleveland department stores

Funeral services will be Friday (9-14-01 for Lois M. Currie, West Salem Township, formerly of Ridgewood at Shenango Valley, Hermitage. She passed away at 2:05 a.m. Tuesday (9-11-01) in St. Paul Homes, West Salem Township. She was 82.

Mrs. Currie was born Oct. 28, 1918, in East Cleveland, Ohio, to John H. and Louise Felitz Muth.

She attended Shaw High School in East Cleveland.

Mrs. Currie was a homemaker and also had worked at Bell Dime Store, Federal Department Store, the May Co. and Winkelman's Department Store, all in the Cleveland area.

She was of the Lutheran faith and was a member of Order of the Eastern Star Euclid (Ohio) Chapter.

Mrs. Currie enjoyed crossword puzzles, reading and spending time with her family.

Her husband, James M. Currie, whom she married in 1938, died Sept. 8, 1997.

Surviving are: a daughter Mrs. Mac (Lois Jean) Pitrone, Green Mountain Falls, Colo.; a son, James J. Currie, Greenville; three grandchildren, Mollie Pitrone, Green Mountain Falls; and Colleen Taylor and Scott Currie, both Greenville; and one great-granddaughter.

Mercer church member was McKeesport Murphy's retiree

Hazel H. Hoover, 238 W. Market St., Mercer, died at 2:40 p.m. Monday (9-10-01) in her home after an extended illness. She was 86.

Mrs. Hoover was born Aug. 17, 1915, in Mercer to Herbert and Cynthia Hedglin Dyer.

She retired as personnel director from G.C. Murphy Co., McKeesport.

Mrs. Hoover was a member of Bethany Presbyterian Church, Mercer.

Surviving are: two daughters, Mrs. Donald (JoAnne) Bartosh, Sharpsville; and Mrs. Russell (Donna) Smith, Mercer; a sister, Doris King, Elizabeth, Pa.; five grandsons; and four great-granddaughters.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Virginia Beirce; and three brothers, Lester, Bob and Virgil Dyer.

A son of Donald and Laura L. Taylor Perrine, he was a member of First United Methodist Church, Sharpsville.

Tower Presbyterian Church member was active volunteer

Helen K. Shelley, 517 Oak Hill Drive, Grove City, died at 5:50 a.m. Tuesday (9-11-01) in United Community Hospital, Pine Township. She was 68.

Mrs. Shelley was born Jan. 2, 1933, in Madison, N.C., to Cornelius and Mary Helen Howard Kuykendall.

The graduate of the University of North Carolina, Greensboro, was a member of Tower Presbyterian Church, Grove City; and Grove City Country Club.

She was active with Grove City Meals on Wheels, United Community Hospital Volunteers and Grove City Bicentennial Committee.

Her husband, Robert C. Shelley, died Oct. 8, 1985.

Surviving are: three children, Tracy L. Shelley, Columbia, S.C.; Robert C. Shelley and his wife, Thea, Alexandria, Va.; and Dr. Brian C.L. Shelley, Geneva, N.Y.; a sister, Mrs. Russell (Cornelia "Connie") Smith, Oak Ridge, Tenn.; and three great-grandchildren, Joshua Shelley, Nathanial Shelley and Ian Shelley, all Alexandria.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents.

Anna Sorrells

St. Michael's Byzantine member lived in California

OAK PARK, Calif. -- Anna Sorrells, 640 Indian Oak Lane, No. 103, Oak Park, formerly of Mertz Towers, 52 S. Mercer Ave., Sharpsville, passed away at 5:30 a.m. Aug. 14, 2001, in Oak Park. She was 86.

Mrs. Sorrells was born July 26, 1915, in Sharon to Michael and Anna Uhalie.

The Farrell High School alumna worked in sales for the former Sharon Store.

She was a member of St. Michael's Byzantine Catholic Church, Hermitage.

Her husband, Morgan O. Sorrells, preceded her in death.

Surviving are: a son, Michael Sorrells, with whom she made her home; a sister, Irene Matricardi, North Tonawanda, N.Y.; a brother, Stephen "Steve" Uhalie, Farrell; and two grandsons, Christopher, Santa Monica, Calif.; and Marc, Hermitage.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Mary Puhala, Helen Lazor and Margaret Funelli; and two brothers, Nick Uhalie and Michael Uhalie.

Jennie Rossi Leonetti

Active St. Bartholomew member enjoyed bowling

Funeral Mass will be Friday (9-14-01) for Jennie Rossi Leonetti, 519 Twitmyer Road, Sharpsville. She passed away at 3:15 a.m. Tuesday (9-11-01) in her home following an extended illness. She was 83.

Mrs. Leonetti was born June 24, 1918, in Sharpsville to Joseph and Pasqualina Polidora Rossi.

A lifelong city resident, she was an alumna of Sharpsville High School class of 1936.

Mrs. Leonetti was a homemaker and an active member of St. Bartholomew Church, Sharpsville, and its St. Olivia Society, serving as secretary for 40 years. She also was part of the church catering service and helped with their fish fries, pasta making and Luncheon Club.

Mrs. Leonetti enjoyed bowling and was a member of the St. Bartholomew Bowling League at Sharpsville Bowling Center.

Surviving are: her husband of 64 years, Angelo Leonetti, whom she married June 12, 1937; three sons, Angelo M. Leonetti Jr., Lodi, Ohio; Thomas G. Leonetti, Saginaw, Texas; and James P. Leonetti, Brook Park, Ohio; one sister, Emily Paulsen, Sharpsville; five grandchildren, Michelle Sanchez, Lisa Swartz; and Anthony, Andrew and Theresa Leonetti; and two great-grandchildren, Michael and Joseph Sanchez.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Anthony Rossi; and a sister, Lena DeSantis.

Katherine M. Ruttinger

Homemaker was member of Fatima church, German club

Katherine M. Ruttinger, Overlook nursing home, New Wilmington, formerly of 52 S. Mercer Ave., Sharpsville; and Spencer Avenue, Sharon, passed away at 5:55 p.m. Tuesday (9-11-01) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. She was 87.

Mrs. Ruttinger was born May 23, 1914, in Sharon to Edward and Madeline Ashburger Baltus.

She attended Sharon schools.

Mrs. Ruttinger was a homemaker and member of Our Lady of Fatima Church and the German Home, both Farrell.

Her husband, Matthew Ruttinger, whom she married Jan. 9, 1937, died June 16, 1989.

Surviving are: a daughter Mrs. Thomas (Lorene) Burprich, Hermitage; a son, Matthew Ruttinger, Hermitage; a sister, Ann Koscinski, Sharon; three grandchildren, Mrs. Mel (Kim) Cione; Thomas M. Burprich and his wife, Lynnette; and Allison Ruttinger; and three great-grandchildren, Cali Cione, Krysta Cione and Jaclyn Burprich, all Hermitage.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Evelyn Baltus; and five brothers, Stephen, Floyd, Andrew, Edward and Leonard Baltus.
