Today's obituaries Tony T. Antonino Area musician taught lessons, retired from Sharon Steel Tony T. Antonino, 926 Norris Ave., Farrell, died Saturday morning (11-10-01) in UPMC Presbyterian, Pittsburgh, following a brief illness. He was 78. Mr. Antonino was born March 20, 1923, in Oliver No. 1, Pa., to Filippo and Filomena DiMarcello Antonino. He graduated in 1940 from the former North Union Township High School, Uniontown. A private first class in the U.S. Army Air Force from 1944 to 1946, he received three medals, Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Service Medal and Victory Medal. Mr. Antonino was an electrician for Sharon Steel Corp.'s former Farrell plant, retiring in 1983 after 37 years. He was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Church, Farrell. Mr. Antonino was a member of American Federation of Musicians, Sharon Local 187, where he was secretary for 15 years; New Castle Local 27; and Warren, Ohio, Local 118. In addition, he was a member of Shenango Valley Italian-American War Veterans; First Italian Social Club, Farrell; American Legion Post 160, Farrell; United Steelworkers of America; Sharon Steel Retirees; and the Penn-Ohio Polka Pals. Mr. Antonino taught accordion lessons at Marks Music Store and was the accordion player in the local group "The Three Notes." He enjoyed working in his garden and Italian music. Surviving are: his wife, the former Florence D. Gulino, whom he married June 18, 1949; two daughters, Nancy A. (M. Brian) Biggins, Hermitage; and Linda Wheaton and her companion Richard Lockovich, Farrell; a son, Phillip Antonino, Lt. Col., United States Marine Corps, and his wife, Sylvia, Hampstead, N.C.; a sister, Violet Moldovan, Hermitage; two brothers, John, Hermitage; and Daniel, Las Vegas; seven grandchildren, Rory Patrick and Michael Brendan Biggins; Melynda Wheaton Habib; James A. Wheaton; and Phillip Tony, Kelly and Alex Antonino; and a great grandchild, Hayden Anthony Wheaton. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Frank, San Antonio; a sister, Concetta Antonino; and a grandchild, Brendan Patrick Biggins. ANTONINO Mary Jayne Hobart Nurse, stewardess formerly of area had brother here CLAREMONT, Calif. -- Mary Jayne Hobart, Arcadia, Calif., formerly of the Shenango Valley, passed away at 8 a.m. Oct. 22, 2001, in Sunrise Assisted Living. She was 77. Miss Hobart was born Jan. 4, 1924, in Slovan, Pa., to Joseph Hobart and Mary Wysocki Hobart. A registered nurse, she graduated in 1944 as a United States Nurse Cadet, a division of the U.S. Public Health Service, at the former C.H. Buhl Hospital in Sharon, now Sharon Regional Health System. Miss Hobart moved to Arcadia in 1963. She was also a stewardess for the former Flying Tiger Airline and worked as a nurse for Continental Can in California. Miss Hobart was a Catholic by faith. Miss Hobart is survived by: a sister, Dorothy Pirih, Upland, Calif.; a brother, Richard Hobart, Masury; nieces and nephews; four grand-nephews; and one grand-niece. Prayer services were held at 7 p.m. Oct. 24, 2001, in Monrovia, Calif., with the Rev. John Reid, pastor of St. Anthony's Church in California, officiating. A graveside committal service was held at 10 a.m. Oct. 25 in Rose Hills Memorial Park, Whittier, Calif., with Mrs. Dorothy Grayson, bereavement team member of Holy Angels Church, Arcadia, officiating.
Dale D. Lafferty Retired Sharon service station owner was active Elk, Mason WARREN, Ohio -- Dale D. Lafferty, formerly of 877 Forker Blvd., Sharon, died at 11:15 p.m. Friday (11-9-01) in Imperial Care Center, Warren. He was 86. Mr. Lafferty was born July 29, 1916, in Sharon, to John H. and Elizabeth Mennell Lafferty. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Sharon. Mr. Lafferty retired in 1979 with 40 years of ownership of the Lafferty-Kelly Quaker State Service Station, which was on the corner of East State Street and North Oakland Avenue, Sharon. He was Past Exalted Ruler in 1963 of Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge 103, Sharon. Mr. Lafferty was also a member of Free and Accepted Masons Shenango Lodge 668, Sharon; Mount Calvary Commandry, Knight's Templar, Greenville; Zem Zem Temple of the Shrine, Erie; and the Mercer County Shrine Club. His wife, the former Alberta E. Newell, whom he married Sept. 21, 1945, died March 5, 1981. Surviving are: two sons, Gregg N. Lafferty and his wife, Tina, Garrettsville, Ohio; and Dale A. Lafferty and his wife, Karen, New Jersey; a daughter, Mrs. Kenneth (Marsha) White, Avon Lake, Ohio; and five grandchildren. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by a sister, Pauline Lafferty.
LAFFERTY Evelyn McCarl Homemaker worked for township election board Evelyn McCarl, formerly of Jackson Center, died at 12:15 p.m. Friday (11-9-01) in Woodland Place Inc., Coolspring Township, after an extended illness. She was 91. Mrs. McCarl was born Dec. 15, 1909, in Jackson Township to Nicholas and Elizabeth E. (Reither) Wiand. A 1928 graduate of Mercer High School, she also graduated from the Shenango Valley Commercial Institute. Mrs. McCarl was a member of Jackson Center Presbyterian Church. A homemaker, she was a member of the Jackson Center Fire Co. Ladies Auxiliary, for which she had been very active in her early years; and had worked on the Jackson Township Election Board for many years. Also in her early years, she was active in the Mercer County 4-H. Mrs. McCarl enjoyed sewing and music. She loved animals. She married Howard W. McCarl in 1944 and he preceded her in death in August 1981. Surviving are: one daughter, Mary Ellen McCarl, Jackson Center; and a sister, Kathryn Deniker, Grove City. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Geraldine Catterson; and four brothers, Harry "Sunny" Wiand, Leonard C. Wiand, and John C. and Donald E. Wiand, who both died in infancy. McCARL Gerald Keenan Weller Mercer native, WWII veteran was retired marketing executive ROANOKE, Va. -- Gerald Keenan Weller died Friday (11-9-01) after a short bout with pancreatic cancer. Mr. Weller was born Sept. 23, 1919, in Mercer. He served in the U.S. Army with the Amphibious Corps in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Mr. Weller attended Grove City College. He was a Mason and a member of the Duck Woods Country Club. Mr. Weller was employed for 39 years by Koppers Co., Pittsburgh, as marketing manager. In 1979, he and his wife fulfilled a longtime dream and retired to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. In 1999 they moved to Roanoke, Va., to be near their daughter and granddaughter. Mr. Weller was a devoted husband of 59 years to Jane Deflin Weller; loving father of Judy Moreth, Roanoke; and Jerry K. Weller, Portland, Ore.; and doting grandfather of Allison Moreth, Roanoke. He is also survived by two nieces and a nephew. He was preceded in death by his brother and sister. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in his name to Kill Devil Hills Library, 400 Mustier St., Kill Devil Hills, N.C. 27948.
