Today's obituaries Dorothy L. Smith First Baptist member retired as Sharon beauty shop owner ZANESVILLE, Ohio -- Dorothy L. Smith, 1575 Bowers Lane, Zanesville, formerly of Boyd Drive in Sharon, died at 4:33 p.m. Wednesday, April 3, 2002, in Bethesda Hospital. She was 82. Mrs. Smith was born Jan. 24, 1920, in Sharon to Benjamin O'Hare and Elizabeth Otte O'Hare. A 1937 alumna of Hickory High School in Hermitage, she was valedictorian of her graduating class. Mrs. Smith retired in 1995 with 46 years as owner and operator of Dorothy's Beauty Shop in Sharon. She was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church in Sharon, where she was a Sunday school teacher for 12 years. Mrs. Smith was also a supporter and friend of West Hill Ministries in Sharon. Surviving are: a daughter, Mrs. Thomas (Patricia) Lyall, Zanesville; two grandchildren, Kathryn and Sara Phillips; a brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Gene Smith, Grove City; a sister-in-law, Mary Ann O'Hare, Hermitage; nieces and nephews; and a special friend and caregiver, Arleeta Hughett, Zanesville. Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Ralph, Harry, William and Paul O'Hare; and three sisters, Gertrude Clark, Margaret McGinnis and Elizabeth Bittler. Alice L. Stewart, 350 Rexford Drive, Hermitage, and currently a resident of Nugent Convalescent Home in Hermitage, died at 4:55 a.m. Thursday, April 4, 2002, in the home. She was 93. Miss Stewart was born Aug. 19, 1908, in Sharon to Harry E. Stewart and Sophia Hoffman Stewart. She was a 1926 graduate of Sharon High School and retired in 1971 with 38 years of service with what was the Shenango Valley Water Co., where she was an executive secretary. Miss Stewart was a member of the Christian Scientist Church. Nieces and nephews survive. Miss Stewart was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Glenn E. and James M. Stewart; and two sisters, Grace Gravatt and May Shilling.
STEWART James B. White Sr. Sharon man was WWII vet, retired from Shenango Inc. A funeral service will be held Saturday for James B. White Sr., 416 York Way, Sharon. He died Tuesday (4-2-02) in Butler Veterans Administration Medical Center. He was 83. Mr. White was born July 12, 1918, in Roanoke, N.C., to Edward White and Cleopatra Johnson White. He retired in 1980 after 35 years from Shenango Inc., Sharpsville, where he was a hook up man in the molding department. A U.S. Army veteran, Mr. White served as a private during World War II. He was a former member of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Farrell. Surviving are: one son, James B. White Jr., Farrell; two stepsons, Carlos Daniels, Sharon; and James Daniels, Austin, Texas; one stepdaughter, Carolyn Daniels, California; one sister, Liza Ann Perry, Sharon; four grandchildren, James C. White, Farrell; and James L. White and his wife LaWanda; and Danielle White and Reggie White, all Brooksville, Fla.; 11 great-grandchildren; three nieces, Cynthia Wilkins, Sharon; and Catherine Cain and Pearl Adair, both Farrell; and two nephews, Frank White, Wooster, Ohio; and Eugene White, Farrell. Mr. White was preceded in death by his parents; eight brothers; and three sisters.
WHITE Frank A. Dusi Bronze Star recipient was musician, ran music store YOUNGSTOWN -- Frank A. Dusi, Park Vista Retirement Center, Youngstown, formerly of Nelbert Lane, Boardman, Ohio, died at 9 p.m. Wednesday evening (4-3-02) in Forum Health Northside Medical Center. He was 89. Mr. Dusi was born Sept. 26, 1912, in Donora, Pa., a son of John and Catherine Dusina Dusi. He came from Erie to the Youngstown area in 1947. For many years, Mr. Dusi was general manager for the Dusi Music Store on Market Street in Youngstown. An accomplished musician, he played with many of the local big bands in the late 1930s and '40s. Mr. Dusi was a member of the Downtown Kiwanas and the local musicians union. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the 69th Division from 1943-46 in Europe. He was awarded the Bronze Star for valor. On April 13, 1945, he captured nine German soldiers who were holding 90 British soldiers captive. His wife, the former Dessa M. Dobson, whom he married Jan. 19, 1942, died May 29, 1995. He leaves: two brothers, William J. Dusi, Altoona, Pa.; and Edward F. Dusi, Brookfield; a nephew; and two nieces. Besides his wife, Mr. Dusi was preceded in death by two brothers, Joseph and Louis Dusi; and three sisters, Josephine Paquet, Lillian Gittermann and Margaret Candor. DUSI Margaret E. Toke Knapp Immaculate Heart of Mary member was a homemaker Margaret E. Toke Knapp, Parkside Manor Apartments, 335 Sterling Ave., Apartment 115, Sharon, formerly of Mercer, died at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 4, 2002, in O'Brien Memorial Nursing Home, Masury, after a one-month illness. She was 90. Mrs. Knapp was born May 5, 1911, in Farrell to Wendel Toke and Aranka Pustai Toke. A homemaker, she was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Mercer. Her husband, Paul J. Knapp, whom she married June 7, 1930, died Feb. 26, 1988. Surviving are: one half sister, Irene Holton, Girard, Ohio; four nephews; and three nieces. Besides her husband, Mrs. Knapp was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Mary Gersch; and a brother, Andrew Toke.
KNAPP Joan Marie Urey Beach Mercer native was longtime kindergarten teacher in Ohio Joan Marie Urey Beach, 231 W. Butler St., Mercer, and 5257 Lockwood Road, Madison, Ohio, died unexpectedly of natural causes at 11 p.m. Wednesday, April 3, 2002, in her residence in Mercer. She was 59. Mrs. Beach was born Feb. 19, 1943, in Mercer to David Mead Urey Sr. and Ruth Mabelle Van Woert Urey. A graduate of Villa Maria College in Erie, she was a kindergarten teacher for more than 35 years at Homer Nash Kimball Elementary School in Madison. Mrs. Beach was of the Roman Catholic faith and attended Immaculate Conception Church in Madison. Her husband, John Beach, whom she married in March 1976, died May 17, 1990. Surviving are: two sisters, Elizabeth, wife of William Philson, Mercer; and Mary Lu, wife of David Weiland, Charleroi, Pa.; a sister-in-law, Charlotte Urey, Mercer; and several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and -nephews. Besides her husband, Mrs. Beach was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, David M. Urey Jr.
BEACH Andrew I. (Miksa) McShaw Transfer man owned Summit Gardens A funeral service will be held Monday for Andrew I. (Miksa) McShaw, 8466 Summit Road, Transfer. He died of natural causes at 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 3, 2002, in his residence following an extended illness. He was 82. Mr. McShaw was born Dec. 4, 1919, in Transfer to Ivan A. and Martha Cefrick Miksa. He was owner of Summit Gardens in Transfer and was a beekeeper, produce farmer, greenhouse owner and carpenter. Mr. McShaw was of the Protestant faith. His first wife, the former Anna L. Paulenich, whom he married in September 1943, died June 30, 1972. Surviving are: his second wife, the former Florence Dunkerley, whom he married Dec. 31, 1976, at home; three daughters, JoAnn McCartney Marshall and Chuck Marshall, Tampa, Fla.; Jane Miksa Battaglia, Phoenix; and Mrs. Bill (June) Collett, Mainesville, Ohio; six sons, David and his wife Linda Miksa, Groveland, Fla.; Don and his wife Ruth Miksa, Malone, Wis.; Larry Miksa, Asheville, N.C.; Ron and his wife Eszter Miksha, Calgary, Canada; Fred and his wife Lisa Miksa, Linesville; and Joe and his wife Marci McShaw, New Holstein, Wis.; two stepdaughters, Mary Ann McCurdy, Transfer; and Mrs. Tom (Carolynn) Stotler, Fredericksburgh, Va.; one brother-in-law, Ted Savchuk, Greenville; 27 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Besides his first wife, Anna, Mr. McShaw was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Judy Rickert; and a sister, Violet Savchuk.
McSHAW Delores Mae McKendry Central Christian member was retired medical assistant A funeral service will be held Saturday for Delores Mae McKendry of 390 Smith Ave. in Sharon. She passed away at 6:45 p.m. Wednesday (4-3-02) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. She was 75. Mrs. McKendry was born Oct. 16, 1926, in Sharon, a daughter of Boyd Eisaman and Elizabeth Dyson Eisaman. A 1944 alumna of Sharon High School, Delores retired in 1976 as a medical assistant from the former Sharon Medical Clinic, where she had worked for more than 10 years. Mrs. McKendry was a member of Central Christian Church in Hermitage. She enjoyed gardening and playing bridge with her friends. Delores married her husband, William H. McKendry, on Aug. 11, 1951, in St. Joseph's Church, Sharon. He passed away Feb. 23, 2000. Surviving are: one daughter, Linda McKendry Weiss, wife of Jack L. Weiss, Hidden Hills, Calif.; two sons, Bill McKendry Jr. and his wife Trudy; and John B. McKendry and his wife Mary Ellen, all Hermitage; two sisters, Beatrice Kloss, Hermitage; and Gladys Davis, wife of retired Colonel David L. Davis, Augusta, Ga.; and seven grandchildren, Ryan W., Samantha J., Willie H., Aaron J., Brandon I. and Brett J. McKendry; and Rogan J. Weiss. Besides her husband, Mrs. McKendry was preceded in death by her parents; and an infant daughter, Joan Marie McKendry.
