Stephen B. Kaluzne
Westinghouse retiree
was WWII Marine veteran

Stephen B. Kaluzne, Hermitage, died unexpectedly of natural causes at 6:45 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 31, 2002, in his residence. He was 80.

Mr. Kaluzne was born Nov. 14, 1921, in Sharon, to Joseph A. Kaluzne and Mary Lepeta Kaluzne.

He was a graduate of the Class of 1941 at Hickory High School in Hermitage.

A World War II veteran, Mr. Kaluzne served as a corporal in the Marine Corps.

He was employed for 40 years at the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp., retiring in 1980 as a structural worker.

He attended Church of the Sacred Heart in Sharon and belonged to Veterans of Foreign Wars Hickory Post 6166 in Hermitage.

Mr. Kaluzne was an avid golfer and woodworker.

His former wife, the former Stella Gladysz, survives.

Also surviving are: a daughter, Mrs. William (Renee) Lyden, Erie; two sons, Dr. Stephen J. Kaluzne and his wife Patti Kaluzne, Winston-Salem, N.C.; and Robert P. and his wife Leslie Kaluzne, Grenada Hills, Calif.; four sisters, Susan Banes and Paula Kaluzne, both Hermitage; Mrs. Patrick (Elsie) McGarry, Sherman Oaks, Calif.; and Val Zelman, Studio City, Calif.; one brother, Edward Kaluzne, Akron, Ohio; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Mary Harsche, Ann Klasic and Betty Petres; and three brothers, Joseph, John and Paul Kaluzne.

Florence E. Morrison
Ex-area women was retired from Pa. School System

HICKORY, N.C. - Florence E. Morrison of 1432 Travis Road, Conover, N.C., formerly of the Shenango Valley, passed away on Friday, Nov. 1, 2002, in the Brian Center - Viemont. She was 77.

Born Feb. 14, 1925, in Mahoning County, Ohio, Mrs. Morrison was a daughter of the late George Harrison West and Edna May Thompson West.

She had retired from the Pennsylvania School System.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Leroy Morrison; a brother, Jesse Brie; and one sister, Betty Wright.

Survivors include: a daughter and son-in-law, Valgene and Michael McWorter, Tucson, Ariz.; a son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Violet Morrison, Conover; a brother, William Brie, Pennsylvania; eight grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

Sarah Mae Odem
Homemaker was active in Community Baptist Church

Sarah Mae Odem, 1141 Fruit Ave., Farrell, passed away at 7 a.m. Friday (11-1-02) in the home of her daughter, Ruth, 389 Emerson Ave. in Farrell. She was 67.

Mrs. Odem was born April 1, 1935, in Goodwater, Ala., to Morgan Burton and Henrietta C a r m i c h a e l Burton.

She attended Goodwater schools and was a homemaker.

As a member of Community Missionary Baptist Church in Farrell, Mrs. Odem belonged to the Pastor's Aide; the missionary group; and the kitchen committee.

She enjoyed fishing and gardening and adored flowers and plants.

Her husband, Fred L. Odem, whom she married April 4, 1953, survives at home.

She also leaves: three daughters, Peggy A. Burns, wife of Samuel L.; and Theresa J. Odem and Ruth M. Odem, all Farrell; three sons, Timothy L. Odem and his wife Mavis C., Sharon; and Willie F. Odem and his wife Tammy A.; and Derrick A. Odem, both Farrell; 20 grandchildren; six greatgrandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, inlaws and friends.

Mrs. Odem was preceded in death by her parents; two daughters, Margaret and Tina Odem; one brother, James Burton; and two great-grandchildren, Dante R. Scarbrough and Justice A. Odem.

Ann E. Thomas
GC woman was member of Beloved Disciple church

Services will be held Tuesday for Ann E. Thomas of Grove City. She died on Friday morning (11-1-02) in Grove Manor, Grove City. She was 89.

Mrs. Thomas was born on Jan. 12, 1913, in Meadville to Antonio and Roselia DiGiacomo Celli.

She was a member of Church of the Beloved Disciple in Grove City.

Her husband, Andrew A. Thomas, whom she married on Nov. 26, 1936, died on Nov. 17, 1982.

Mrs. Thomas is survived by three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Roselyn Thomas; a son, John A. Thomas; two brothers, Albert Schall and Luigi Celli; and a sister, Julia Thomas. .

Mrs. Andrew A. (Ann E.), 89, Grove City.

Helen M. Arthur
Hermitage woman owned Sharon Optical, was nurse

Helen M. Arthur, 3990 E. State St., Hermitage, died of natural causes at 9:45 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1, 2002, in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. She was 84.

Mrs. Arthur was born Nov. 16, 1917, in Titusville, Pa., to Samuel B. Minick and Jeanette Elder Minick.

A graduate of the former Hyde High School near Titusville and a 1941 graduate of Allegheny School of Nursing in Meadville, she was co-owner of Sharon Optical for 20 years. She retired in 1981.

Previously Mrs. Arthur was a nursing supervisor of the operating room for the former Sharon General Hospital, retiring in 1951; and was a head nurse for the office of Dr. R.J. Riddle in Sharon.

She was a member of Hickory United Methodist Church in Hermitage and was a past worthy matron of Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 156 in Farrell; and belonged to the Ladies Auxiliary to Veterans of Foreign Wars Hickory Post 6166 in Hermitage.

Her husband, Richard H. Arthur, whom she married on Aug. 28, 1942, died on June 10, 1986.

Surviving are: a daughter, Mrs. Robert (Barbara J.) Teehan, Naples., Fla.; a son, Richard L. and his wife Rosalie Arthur, Sharpsville; four grandchildren, Vicki Miller, Brian Arthur, Robert A. Arthur and Holly Teehan; and four greatgrandchildren, Jackie Miller, Heather Miller, Lisa Arthur and Ricky Arthur.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Arthur was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Ruth Morrison; and two brothers, Cecil Minick and Samuel Minick.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Patricia Banish, 10565 NW 13th Ave., Gainesville, formerly of the Shenango Valley, died at 9:42 a.m. Friday (11-1-02) in E.T. York Hospice Care Center. She was 64.

enjoyed birdwatching

Charlene Anne Maykowski, 3000 Valley View Road, South Pymatuning Township, died at 11:55 p.m. Friday (11-1-02) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System following an extended illness. She was 66.

Born Feb. 10, 1936, in S h e n a n g o Township, Mrs. Maykowski was a daughter of Joseph Kruck and Mary Kruk Kruck.

She attended Mercer High School.

A homemaker, Mrs. Maykowski was a member of Church of Notre Dame in Hermitage and enjoyed crocheting and working with crafts.

As a birdwatcher, she enjoyed feeding birds from her many bird feeders located around her home.

She married Jerome Maykowski on June 24, 1965, who survives at home.

Mrs. Maykowski also leaves: four daughters, Mary Jane and her husband Edward Rock, Hermitage; Kathryn A. and her husband Richard McNeelege, Georgetown, Texas; Sharon L. Benevedez, Lake Charles, La.; and Tina Marie and her husband W. Allen Babcock, Sharpsville, with whom she made her home; four sons, Ralph A. and his wife Lettie Maykowski, Virginia Beach, Va.; Joseph R. and his wife Sherry Swartz, Golden Valley, Ariz.; Harold E. "Ed" and his wife Shirley Swartz, Sharon; and John A. Maykowski, Bel Fair, Wash.; two sisters, Geraldine M. Eckert, Sharon; and Helen L. and her husband James Kapusta, Hermitage; a brother, Michael J. Kruck, Hermitage; 17 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Maykowski was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Joseph C. Kruck.

Grace Louise Lahti
Kinsman woman was former salon owner

KINSMAN, Ohio - Grace Louise Lahti, 9050 Stanhope-Kelloggsville Road, Kinsman, died at noon Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002, in her residence. She was 69.

Mrs. Lahti was born March 4, 1933, in Greenville to Edward Leonhard and Florence Bliss Leonhard.

A longtime Kinsman resident, Mrs. Lahti was owner and operator of Country Curl Beauty Salon for more than 20 years, retiring in 1983.

Grace was a born-again Christian and attended the Rock of Grace Church in Kinsman. She also belonged to the Williamsfield (Ohio) Mothers Club for more than 30 years.

She married Sulo Maynard Lahti on Nov. 7, 1951, and was preceded in death by him on Jan. 16, 1976.

Mrs. Lahti enjoyed gardening, baking and hospitality.

Surviving are: a son, Maynard Lahti, Williamsfield; three daughters, Sue Panak, Williamsfield; Sandi Sirrine, Eureka, Calif.; and Cindy Sawayda, Sherburn, Minn.; three sisters, Doris Cooper, Florence, Ala.; Jayne Barnett, Greenville; and Patty Meszaros, Niles, Ohio; three brothers, Edward Leonhard, Espyville, Pa.; Raymond Leonhard, Williamsfield; and Richard Leonhard, Kinsman; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Lahti was preceded in death by her parents.
